The streaming service Twitch has exclusively hired rapper Logic. The deal is said to be worth seven figures, providing the rapper with at least one million US dollars. The curious thing: The rapper has only 54,000 followers on Twitch and was only on air for 6 hours last year.
This is what has happened recently:
- Twitch had given the popular gaming streamer Dr Disrespect a multi-year contract in March 2020, but banned him without explanation at the end of June.
- The successful rapper Logic announced a few days ago his retirement from his career as a rapper after 10 years in the music industry.
- Now Logic has announced that he will stream exclusively on Twitch. According to him, he is receiving a seven-figure sum.
New eyes for Twitch, new money for rappers
This is what Logic says about the deal: In an interview with TheVerge, he says the deal would be good for both sides:
- He would be blessed to have millions of fans and followers. He brings “new eyes” to Twitch.
- Which in turn would bring new money to his bank account, he said jokingly.
On Instagram, Logic has 6.7 million subscribers. On Twitter, 2.4 million people follow him.
According to Logic, he has been a user of the Twitch platform since 2015 or 2016 and is already a gamer. He also likes the moderation on Twitch, as he is not a fan of social media.
He says he doesn’t like it when a crowd of unmoderated people sends him messages telling him to kill himself. They feel able to approach someone so harshly only when that person is so big that they seem faceless to them.
Only 6 hours on Twitch in 365 days
What does Logic do on Twitch? In the last 365 days, Logic was only seen on Twitch twice, for a total of 6 hours (via sullygnome).
During one of the streams, an average of 20,600 people watched him while he played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and rapped.
Until recently, Logic had only 39,803 followers on Twitch. That number has now grown to over 54,000. The trend is upward.
Logic plans to present his new and final album “No Pressure” exclusively on Twitch on July 21. Otherwise, it seems he wants to play and relax a bit, as he told The Verge.
I’m not that rapper type, man. I’m just a nerd. I love video games.
The rapper Logic
The curious thing is: Normally, only gaming streamers who have built a large community on Twitch, stream for years, and grind hundreds or even thousands of hours each year receive such “exclusive deals.” Ninja once said, he did not live in 2018, but was a slave to the stream.
Streamers often work for such multi-million deals for years.
The deal for Logic is the first exclusive deal for a “non-gaming” streamer.
Twitch apparently wants to move away from being a “pure” gaming platform
This is what’s behind it: Twitch wants to move away from being a pure gaming platform and explore new fields. On Twitch, there is painting, fashion shows, and also music. Everyone knows that.
However, the fact that Twitch is willing to spend so much money on someone who has not yet proven themselves on the platform shows how serious they take this new role and how much trust they place in Logic’s charisma.
For Twitch, rap and gaming apparently go hand in hand.
The deal for Logic comes at a turbulent time for Twitch. A few weeks ago, they banned the popular streamer Dr Disrespect, the “face of Twitch.” No reasons were given for the ban. The streamer has since commented on his situation:
