The satirist Jan Böhmermann (ZDF Magazin Royal) has once again dealt with the German Twitch-streamer MontanaBlack. In his show on Friday, May 17, Böhmermann addressed the topic of disposable vapes and used MontanaBlack as an example of someone who says: “I smoke vapes, I don’t let anyone tell me otherwise.”
How does Böhmermann use the streamer this time? In the introduction to the topic “Smoking for the bin. Disposable vapes” (via youtube), Böhmermann features a TikTok clip of MontanaBlack. The Twitch streamer said:
“Of course I vape on the train, dude. You really don’t think I would let myself be forbidden from vaping there, dude? And I was sitting there alone, and of course I don’t vape there and blow it all over, but I do take a hit from my vape, dude, and exhale a little on the floor.”
Böhmermann imitated the “vaping down” and said: “Yeah, totally normal, dude. Disposable vapes just taste good, dude. Monte likes them. Hafti likes them.”
MontanaBlack already has some difficulties with Deutsche Bahn regarding regulations.
Böhmermann addresses disposable vapes and the problem
What was the topic of the segment? The segment discussed disposable vapes. In doing so, ZDF Magazin Royale criticized mainly the environmental issues of the disposable product:
- For example, the vapes contain lithium batteries that could actually be recharged, but are permanently built into the product and end up in waste.
- Lithium is an important material for the future, especially for electric cars, and is being wasted here.
- Furthermore, it was criticized that a lot of electronic waste is generated with the vapes.
Vapes were portrayed as a lifestyle product that is promoted by German rappers, making a lot of money from the product while the downsides are kept quiet.
Among other things, it was criticized that the vapes are more attractive to teenagers as “cotton candy nicotine” than cigarettes, which are labeled with warning notices.
MontanaBlack as an example of irresponsible behavior
What does Böhmermann have to do with MontanaBlack? The satirist Böhmermann had pushed MontanaBlack into the right corner during a podcast in 2020, for which he was heavily criticized. MontanaBlack defended himself against this accusation and criticized especially that his entire community was being judged collectively.
In 2022, Böhmermann addressed statements made by the streamer in connection with a critique of loot boxes, especially in the FIFA series. Böhmermann criticized Twitch streamers for promoting loot boxes despite them replicating gambling mechanics and being addictive.
For his satire format, Böhmermann also repeatedly takes on the role of MontanaBlack and reacts in his version of a reaction streamer to ZDF formats such as Bares für Rares.
It is striking that Böhmermann repeatedly uses the Twitch streamer MontanaBlack as an example of individuals who take no responsibility for their actions. His influence on the youth is frequently addressed.
MontanaBlack commented in 2022 on Böhmermann’s critique of Twitch streamers in the area of “loot boxes.” At that time, he refused to take responsibility for what his fans do and do not do: MontanaBlack on ZDF Magazin Royale’s critique of Twitch streamers: ‘Everyone is responsible for themselves’
