Fextralife is one of the most watched channels on Twitch and regularly dominates major releases like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4. However, some streamers feel disadvantaged by the channel’s methods and wish that the streaming platform would put a stop to it.
What is the situation? Currently, one of the most-watched channels on Twitch is Fextralife. Based on watch time, the channel ranks 11th worldwide when looking at the last 30 days (as of August 29, 2023). In June 2023, Fextralife reached number 1 with the release of Diablo 4 (via sullygnome).
However, some Twitch streamers have taken issue with the channel. They accuse Fextralife of “stealing viewers” and using other unscrupulous methods.
The release of Baldur’s Gate once again boosted Fextralife on Twitch.
Fextralife dominates major releases
What is the problem with Fextralife? Unlike well-known streaming personalities like Asmongold or MontanaBlack, the channel does not represent an individual. Instead, there are 3 different people streaming under the names Cas, Tyr, and Yuria.
By dividing their time, they can simply be on air for more hours than if everything had to be covered by a single person. This gives them an enormous advantage, especially in terms of hours viewed.
But Fextralife also takes advantage of another benefit that annoys other streamers: Behind the channel is a website that lists over 150 wikis with guides and information on numerous major releases.
The in-house streams are then integrated into all the wikis. If someone looks something up there, they are automatically counted as a viewer, even if they are not consciously watching the stream. With this strategy, Fextralife already faced criticism in 2022.
Now Fextralife has once again managed to establish itself as the most-watched channel for two of the biggest releases of 2023 so far: Diablo 4 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Thus, the criticism of the practices of the website is once again in focus.
The YouTuber Moistcr1tikal has addressed the company’s approach in a recent video, which we have embedded here in the original English:
Streamer says: ‘They are taking away a spot from others’
What other criticisms are there? At the same time, Fextralife is under fire on Reddit. The mod of a subreddit for Baldur’s Gate 3 with more than 31,500 members accused the website’s operators of using bots to automatically downvote links to competitors and critical comments so that they no longer appear.
The post was later supplemented with a statement from Fextralife. The website’s operators deny being behind the actions and emphasize that anyone could be responsible. A detailed statement was also posted in the forum of the website.
Cr1tikal also criticizes Fextralife for claiming to have been unaware of Reddit bots until now. After all, the automated helpers should be known to every user: ‘It’s perfectly fine to defend against the allegations and point out logical inconsistencies. But why tell such a blatant lie?’
However, the YouTuber has little hope that Twitch will take action against Fextralife’s methods. After all, the platform benefits from the high numbers that the channel can show: ‘This is not good for other streamers. It takes away a spot from streamers who deserve it more and who actually have communities.’
Although Fextralife’s methods do not violate Twitch’s guidelines, streamers wish that the platform would act against the channel’s practices. It remains to be seen whether this will happen.
On Twitch, multiplayer titles and the streamers who play them usually dominate. With Baldur’s Gate, a rather atypical game has catapulted to the top of the streaming platform and also offered smaller streamers a moment in the spotlight:
