Good news for zombie fans: A modern classic of the genre is likely to continue. Joining are the director and the screenwriter of the original film. Thanks to them, the undead can no longer just shuffle, but can run frighteningly fast.
Which film is it about? “28 Days Later” by British director Danny Boyle was released in 2002. It is now considered a classic of the genre. The story tells of a contagious zombie virus that spreads rapidly in London and across England. And the actual undead are also racing through the streets of London uncontrollably.
Unlike classic zombies, which usually shuffle very slowly, those in the film could run. This increased the tension – and the danger for the protagonists surrounding the main actor Cillian Murphy. Most probably know him from the “Dark Knight” trilogy, “Peaky Blinders”, or his recent role as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Over 20 years after the release of the first part, a sequel is reportedly in development.

Director and screenwriter of the first part are back
Who is behind the sequel? While director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland were only involved as executive producers in the official second installment of the series, “28 Weeks Later” (2007), they are now taking the creative reins again. According to ign.com, they are currently in talks with various film studios and streaming services.
Danny Boyle, who is also responsible for films like “Trainspotting” or “Sunshine”, will direct again. His writer Alex Garland has also made a name for himself as a director in recent years. The sci-fi recommendations “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” bear his name.
The new film is set to be titled “28 Years Later”. For their renewed collaboration, Boyle and Garland drew inspiration from the successful revival of the Mad Max series.
Its director George Miller successfully brought his presumed dead action film series back to theaters in 2015. “Mad Max: Fury Road” currently ranks 198 in the IMDb Top 250 movies, and is set to receive a sequel titled “Furiosa” later this year.

If “28 Years Later” is successful at the box office, those in charge are even considering an entire trilogy of zombie films.
Until then, we can look forward to another nail-biting film with the beloved undead. There is no timeframe for the release yet. Depending on how quickly negotiations proceed in Hollywood, we might really be facing “28 Years Later”.
