Trust Taxon in Test: Solid €70 webcam for friends of light paranoia

The Trust Taxon QHD is a mid-range webcam that you can buy for just €70 on Amazon. We took a closer look at the webcam and put it through a practical test. The auto-focus and the simple yet effective privacy filter stand out especially. The camera impresses us as a solid upgrade for cheap webcams that some people hastily purchased during the pandemic.

Why did I get the camera? Although I have been online for over 20 years and have been making money from it for several years, I was a “voice chat” refuser for the first 10 years and only communicated through writing with others in my MMORPGs. I even boycotted webcams for 20 years.

However, with Corona, the time came when a webcam became absolutely necessary as more and more video conferences sprinkled into my daily life. The problem: The market for webcams was completely wiped out in May 2020 and I got one of the few webcams that even appeared on Amazon: A cheap thing that quickly hit its limits. Back then, I paid €55 for this mediocre camera from a no-name manufacturer; today it would be available for €25.

An “PostIdent” procedure was not possible with my old webcam, the image of the ID card simply did not come into focus, and the lady on the other end quickly capitulated. Thanks to the auto-focus of the Trust Taxon QHD, I can now identify myself online by holding up my ID card. The camera captures documents like the ID card in razor-sharp quality once the auto-focus has locked in the image.

The Trust Taxon is a solid webcam in the mid-price segment.

What I used the webcam for: I used the webcam solely for video conferences. It was absolutely trouble-free and easy to use.

The Trust Taxon works on a “plug & play” principle: There is no additional software to install.

The video mode of the camera should also suffice for “good enough for home use” videos on Twitch or YouTube if 30 FPS is enough for you. However, you must pay attention to choosing the right color and light combination in the room, as the auto-focus can make you appear too dark or too bright. Ambitious streamers might want to look for a dedicated streamer cam.

How the installation of the Taxon went: The installation is straightforward. The camera can be plugged into the computer or laptop. If you want a more professional look, you can also mount the camera on a tripod, but that has to be purchased separately.

The camera connects with a 2-meter-long USB 2.0 cable directly to the computer and weighs about 127 grams. The dimensions are 50mm in height, 90mm in width, and 65mm in depth.

There is also a built-in microphone, but “speaking through the webcam” is considered a medium-level offense.

Smart privacy filter gives a good feeling

What’s up with the paranoia? A little gag of the webcam: There is a sliding switch on the webcam that simply closes the lens. This way, you can be sure that no image is being transmitted, as the camera simply sees nothing.

This is particularly interesting for people who are afraid of being spied on through some programs that turn off the LED light on the webcam to signal “You’re not sending”, but still show everything. Even if you need to do something quickly that others shouldn’t see, the mechanical slide works to go “dark”.

An upgrade for security-conscious home office workers

This is my conclusion: The Trust Taxon QHD webcam is a solid mid-range webcam for people who want or need to attend video conferences and are looking for a camera that showcases them well, but do not want to spend much time on settings or assembly.

The webcam works well “out of the box” and should comfortably meet the needs of most users.

The camera can be plugged in and it works. The image is sharp, though sometimes a little shaky.

Especially the privacy filter is a clever solution for anyone who wants to ensure that only the person who should see them actually does so.
