The Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO were supposed to be the next big feature. However, many trainers are disappointed with it. They criticize the paywall that stands behind it.
Here is the current status: Since August 27, Mega Evolutions are available. You can collect Mega Energy through raids or a special research and then initiate the evolution.
However, the current system has caused a lot of criticism. You have to invest too much money to be able to perform the Mega Raids. Trainers are even asking whether this could be the biggest paywall since the game’s release.
Mega Evolutions and Their Problem
What is causing the stress? To get the Mega Evolutions of Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur, you need to invest 200 Mega Energy each. Then you can transform the respective Pokémon into a Mega Pokémon for exactly 4 hours.
The energy for this can only be obtained from raids and there are between 30 and 50 Mega Energy per raid. So you need to complete at least 4 raids to have the 200 Mega Energy for one Pokémon. If you want to evolve all 3 Pokémon, that’s even a minimum of 12 raids.
So, anyone who doesn’t want to wait days for this has to invest in premium raid passes. When converted into money, a Mega Evolution can easily cost 4 Euros. So you pay 4 Euros to have a Mega Evolution for 4 hours.
Here is the criticism: On reddit there is a post with an incredible 88 awards. Such awards are rarely given out, and typically a popular thread in the subreddit has about 10 awards. The post has already received over 6600 upvotes and it describes in detail what the problem is.
- The Mega Evolutions are considered useless since raids can be completed without these monsters.
- The raid bonus from the evolutions is nice, but not critical to justify investing so many raid passes in advance.
- The new speed bonus suggests completing raids with particularly many trainers – you don’t need Mega Evolutions with so many players around.
Overall, the mood is down. Many were very excited about the implementation of Mega Evolutions and are now disappointed that they only provide very small advantages, which are also very costly.
However, there are even harsher voices about Mega Evolutions. The reddit user dragonbreath94 writes: “Megas at the moment – The biggest paywall since the launch?” There he once again describes the problem that you have to complete 4 raids to ultimately utilize the advantages of a Mega Pokémon in another raid.
What do you think? Are the Mega Evolutions also hidden behind a paywall for you, or are you willing to invest to obtain the special evolutions?
