In Pokémon GO, legendary monsters are particularly popular among trainers. It’s all the more frustrating when you have to leave one in the wild. But that’s exactly what a player recently experienced. We at MeinMMO looked at what happened.
Which Pokémon is involved? In Pokémon GO, alongside common Pokémon like Bulbasaur or Pikachu, there are also so-called legendary Pokémon. These are particularly coveted by players as they are often stronger and thus good candidates for raids or the GO Battle League.
Normally, these legendary Pokémon, such as Mewtwo, can only be encountered occasionally in Level 5 raids or obtained from rewards of the GO Battle League from rank 20 onwards. But the Rocket boss Giovanni recently added a strong legendary shadow Pokémon to his team.
Since the introduction of the daily adventure incense, trainers now also have the chance to encounter certain specimens in the wild. However, such an encounter led to significant disappointment for one player. We’ll show you why.
Why a trainer had to leave Galarian Articuno
What is adventure incense? With adventure incense, trainers have the opportunity to encounter special spawns for 15 minutes once a day when they are moving. Besides various monsters that normally spawn, there’s a chance to encounter rarer specimens or legendary Pokémon, such as the Galarian birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.
However, these encounters are quite rare and the chances of actually catching one are low. Therefore, trainers are particularly excited when they encounter such a specimen and certainly do not want to miss the chance to catch it. However, a trainer now reports that he had to leave a Galarian bird in the wild.
Here’s why he couldn’t catch the bird: As Reddit user daddy1973 explains in his post, he was using the adventure incense when suddenly a Galarian Articuno spawned. It was his first encounter with this bird, so of course he wanted to catch it. But it simply wasn’t possible.
As seen in his picture, the legendary Pokémon spawned directly at a PokéStop. Thus, clicking on it was impossible, even by spinning and zooming, which left daddy1973 with no choice but to leave the rare Galarian Pokémon behind.
He disappointingly wrote on Reddit: “I saw my first Galarian Articuno today. It spawned directly in this PokéStop. I could neither click on it by zooming nor by spinning.”

Has this happened to other players as well?
The post by daddy1973 has caused quite a stir on Reddit. As of now (November 16, 2022, 10:00), it already has more than 1,200 upvotes. The comments also indicate that other trainers have had similar issues with their spawns (via reddit.com):
- slipperyp: “There are a number of posts warning about this issue. I don’t know if it can be practically prevented, but you’re not the first person to experience this spawn at a location that overlaps with a gym/a stop that seems unreachable.”
- jedispyder: “I experienced that in another Pokémon, and when I caught that Pokémon, it despawned (I tried several times to click around the other Pokémon before I attempted to quickly catch it, how foolish of me).”
- nmrnmrnmr: “I hate that. This hasn’t happened to me with these particular ones, but definitely with another. If it’s something you really want, it’s super frustrating.”
Other trainers are trying to cheer up daddy1973 by reminding him how poor the catch rates of the Galarian birds are. Whosdaman writes, for example (via reddit.com): “If it makes you feel better, it would have run away anyway.”
More issues with the Galarian birds: Another problem mentioned in the comments are specific loading issues. User OobeBanoobe points out that you should definitely download the assets so that the Galarian birds load properly while on the go.
He himself has experienced that he only saw a shimmering light and the spawn eventually disappeared because the Pokémon couldn’t load in time. He writes:
Another issue to be warned about, which your post reminded me of, is downloading all assets in the area of advanced settings.

I recently activated a daily incense and was 99% sure that one of the birds would spawn as a glowing light while the game attempted to download the asset. The light despawned before the asset loaded, and I couldn’t tap on the light to bring up the catch screen. Once I was home, all objects were downloaded.
