Our author Schuhmann has been grumbling for 2 years about the €60 he spent on Steam. He was a big fan of Total War: Warhammer: 1 and 2, but he just couldn’t get into part 3. But now the game is supposed to be finally good with new DLCs, say colleagues and the Steam reviews.
That was my mistake that has been bothering me for 2 years: I have been a huge fan of the Total War series for 20 years, having played Rome and Medieval extensively and then truly falling in love with the Warhammer parts 1 and especially 2. That’s why it was a must-buy for me to get Total War: Warhammer 3 for €60 on Steam without waiting for reviews or deals.
But: The spark never ignited, even though I tried. After two years, I have only played 32 hours and the last time I checked in was in February 2023. Problems in the game, like the horrible Chaos Dwarf expansions, made me lose the desire to give Warhammer 3 a second and third chance.
I felt like many: I found the campaign simply boring with the mandatory Chaos episodes, and when the big mode came, my interest was gone. I ended up playing the second part again.
Yes, one could say: €60 for 33 hours is not bad at all. But I really didn’t have that much fun during those 33 hours. It was more of a “Now that I’ve paid for it, there has to be something worthwhile” kind of play.
Total War is finally recovering on Steam after 2 years
What is changing now: Anyone who currently adds another €22.92 will receive the bundle “Thrones of Decay” and thus 3 new DLCs that cost €9 each individually.
As our in-house Warhammer expert Benedict Grothaus says, the DLC adds three legendary commanders for existing factions: New commanders have come for the Empire, Dwarfs, and Nurgle.
In addition, there is a free balance patch as well as another free commander and several new units, along with revised mechanics.
The anticipation for the DLC was high, and it seems to be fully confirmed now.
The mood is turning positive, Warhammer 3 has more players on Steam than in the last 2 years
Here are the reactions: Total War: Warhammer 3 now has almost 74,000 players on Steam again, the most it has seen in 2 years.
The Steam reviews, which are still generally mediocre, have skyrocketed to “very positive” in the last 30 days. And our expert Grothaus praises the game to the highest heavens.
In the reviews, people rave about the great new content: The 3 new lords are rated very well on Steam with 92%, 89%, and 90%.
Maybe the €60 I sunk into Total War: Warhammer 3 2 years ago are worth it now 2 years later. Although I will probably have to bite the bullet and throw in another €22.
