In August 2018, Monster Hunter World was particularly strong in its newly released PC version. And the WoW expansion Battle for Azeroth reignited interest and thus revenue for Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. WoW even surpassed LoL and PUBG.
The market research institute SuperData announced which games generated the most revenue digitally in August 2018 across PC, console, and mobile. Since these figures only account for revenues from digital sales, boxed versions are not considered.
Fortnite and WoW drive high revenues: The total revenue of digital games across all platforms was $8.47 billion. This is an increase of seven percent compared to the previous year.
Fortnite is once again mentioned as one of the main revenue drivers on consoles. In the PC sector, World of Warcraft is a crucial factor for the growth.
World of Warcraft rises
The triumphant return of WoW: In the PC gaming sector, there have been some changes. Although Dungeon Fighter Online still holds the first position, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft managed to climb from position 7 to rank 2 thanks to the new expansion Battle for Azeroth. League of Legends dropped from position 2 to rank 3.
Entering in 4th place is the newly released Monster Hunter World, which is also a success on PC. The online shooter Crossfire dropped from position 3 to rank 5, and Fantasy Westword Journey fell from 4th to 6th place.
Fortnite lost two ranks on PC and is now found in 7th position, closely followed by Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, which slid from rank 6 to 8th place.
The online card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft makes a comeback at 9th place. Here, the expansion featuring Dr. Bumm has been released.
World of Tanks appears at 10th place, while Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2 completely drop out.
Console charts with a familiar leader
Fortnite remains at the top: In the console gaming sector, Fortnite: Battle Royale holds the 1st rank. FIFA 18 and GTA 5 also maintain their positions at 2 and 3. Especially popular in the USA is the Madden NFL series: The latest installment, Madden NFL 19, entered directly at position 4.
Rank 5 is now occupied by Call of Duty: WW2, while Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege finds itself at rank 6. Also newly entered is the console version of the highly acclaimed RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 at rank 7.
On consoles, Blizzard’s Overwatch celebrates a return at rank 8, and with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 at position 9, players seem to be preparing for the release of Black Ops 4. The last position is occupied by NBA 2K18, just like last month.
Little new in the mobile sector: The mobile games segment in August looks almost the same as in July. All ranks except for 9 and 10 have remained the same.
Only Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga have swapped places. This also shows that both Pokemon Go and the battle royale game Knives Out are still very popular.
