The most successful games in April 2018 are clear. Which games have made the most money on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Mobile? We’re talking about titles like Fortnite, God of War, Hearthstone, and GTA V Online.
Digital revenues are growing: The site Superdata reports every month on how the global digital games market is evolving. So how much money is being made through digital platforms? Here we don’t account for retail sales, but rather transactions over the PS Store, Steam, or the Xbox Store. In April 2018, the market grew by 23% compared to 2017. Consumers worldwide spent $9.09 billion on games.
PC: Hearthstone is back, Far Cry 5 is out
How does it look on PC? There hasn’t been much change on the PC. League of Legends has regained its place in the sun. In March, LoL was briefly ousted by Dungeon Fighter Online, which had special promotions running. Now, LoL is back again.
Also back is “Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft”: Blizzard’s card game had long been missing from the top 10, but with the new expansion “Witchwood” it has now returned to 7th place. Witchwood launched on April 12. Hearthstone takes the place of Far Cry 5, which is leaving the top 10 on PC. PUBG has also fallen slightly, going from 7th in March to 9th now. Fortnite maintains its 5th place.
How do PS4 and Xbox One look?
God of War is here: God of War enters the consoles at 2nd place, being a pure exclusive title for the PS4. Kratos has broken all records and achieved the “largest console launch of an exclusive title of all time.” It is estimated that it has sold 2.1 million units since launch – solely in digital units. That’s double what Uncharted 4 sold.
Fortnite is booming, GTA V is going back: Fortnite has earned $296 million across all platforms. This is huge and brings it to 1st place on consoles – just like in March. Fortnite is likely also responsible for the gradual end of Grand Theft Auto V’s winning streak. There, revenues are declining after a long period of growth. GTA V drops from rank 5 to 6. Far Cry 5 is taking a deeper dive, going from 2nd in March to 5th now.
Monster Hunter World and Sea of Thieves are saying goodbye
Monster Hunter World is out: The time in the top 10 is over for Monster Hunter World for now. Without microtransactions, the era of Monster Hunter World as one of the 10 most successful games on the digital market is over. In return, Ghost Recon Wildlands and Battlefield 1 are back. Games like Madden NFL 18 and the likely short-lived Sea of Thieves are out.
Mobile is dominated by Honour of Kings
What’s up with Mobile? In Mobile, the “LoL-Mobile” variant, Honour of Kings, is still high up. They have snuggled into the top of the mobile charts. With $185 million, they earned even more than in March. Honour of Kings is known locally as “Arena of Valor” and is of course planning a battle royale variant.
