What’s next for the Horde and Alliance in World of Warcraft ? Tomorrow we will know, as the finale of the war campaign releases.
After a somewhat prolonged phase on the PTR, tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24th, in America, and the day after (Wednesday) in Europe, the release of World of Warcraft Patch 8.2.5 will take place. In addition to lots of little things, such as the new Worgen and Goblin models, a bee mount, and the new “Recruit a Friend” feature, it is also an important day for players of the Horde and Alliance. The fate of the factions will be decided, as the war campaign comes to an end.
What happens tomorrow? With the release of Patch 8.2.5, the last chapter of the war campaign will be playable. Here, all the threads of the story that players have experienced over the past nearly year should come together. With each patch, the war campaign progressed, leading the Alliance to gain the upper hand, but then they lost a large portion of their army in Nazjatar.
Both factions have only a few troops left, and a rebellion has formed against Sylvanas, now also supported by the Alliance. Now, the war campaign is set to conclude.
Will player decisions have an impact? It will be especially interesting to see what impact player decisions will have. After all, players of the Horde have had multiple opportunities to choose whether to remain loyal to Sylvanas and tell her everything about the traitors, or to join the traitors themselves.
It is clear, however, that there must be a “unified” ending, where the same outcome stands in the end while still taking player decisions into account.
The patch will also bring two really big cinematics.
Blizzard remains tight-lipped: It is especially interesting that no quest of the war campaign was playable on the PTR. Blizzard has encrypted the data for it, and they were not accessible on the PTR. Thus, the war campaign was played by only a few Blizzard employees. The tension regarding the outcome of the war campaign is correspondingly high.
Which characters will be important? It is clear that many characters will play a role in the story of Patch 8.2.5. Here are just a few, along with many unresolved questions:
- Wrathion: The black dragon has received a new model and is currently researching a protection against the madness of the Old Gods. His quest has already been played and is known.
- Calia Menethil: Arthas’s sister has received her own exclusive model. So far, she has not appeared in Battle for Azeroth at all, only in the backstory. She is now a hybrid of “Light-filled and Undead”. Sylvanas was concerned that she wants to take control of the Forsaken.
- Sylvanas: The current Warchief of the Horde will hopefully finally carry out the “Master Plan”. So far, players are still puzzling over what she actually wants. A possible goal could be an attack on Stormwind, but becoming involved with the Old Gods is also possible. Both would fit well with the alleged leak of the next expansion “Shadowlands” .
- Saurfang: The Orc was one of the first to stand against Sylvanas and left the Horde. Now, he indirectly leads the rebellion and tries to put an end to Sylvanas’ machinations.
- Baine Bloodhoof: Baine openly stood against Sylvanas and is now concerned that Thunder Bluff will be attacked by the Banshee Queen.
Of course, there are other characters, like Lor’themar Theron, Thrall, Thalyssra, and Jaina, who will also likely play an important part, but have so far taken a rather subordinate role in the rebellion.
What will the new “Status Quo” be? The most exciting question, however, is how things will look for the Horde and Alliance after the war campaign. Will the eternal conflict finally come to an end, and will the war – if only temporarily – cease? Or will one side dominate clearly and enter the next expansion as the “victor”?
With bad luck, we may have to wait: However, there is also a small chance that the war campaign will not be fully playable at the launch of Patch 8.2.5 and some missions will only be unlocked in many weeks. Since Patch 8.2.5 is advertised with the “conclusion of the war campaign”, this would likely upset some fans.
In any case, it will be exciting, and from Tuesday evening you can expect the first spoilers when the Americans get to play the new chapter. Starting Wednesday, you can experience it yourself.
