Originally, James Cameron did not want to cast actress Kate Winslet as Rose in Titanic for a very specific reason, as he mentioned in an interview.
The film Titanic by star director James Cameron tells the story of the tragic shipwreck of the ocean liner of the same name.
At the center of the story are the young aristocrat Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet) and the artist Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), who fall in love aboard the ship.
However, as James Cameron revealed in an interview on November 22, 2002, with GQ, he originally did not want to cast Kate Winslet in Titanic and explained why.

That’s why James Cameron did not want “Corset Kate” in Titanic
“I didn’t see Kate for the role at first,” James Cameron said. The actress had already built a reputation through several period dramas and was known as “Corset Kate”.
Therefore, the director initially thought it would be boring and too obvious to give her the lead role in Titanic; in his opinion, it simply looked like “the laziest casting in the world”.

Despite his objections, James Cameron met with the actress, even though he was considering other actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man, The Royal Tenenbaums) for the role at that time.
But when the director met Kate Winslet in person, he was convinced immediately. “She was fantastic,” James Cameron gushed to GQ. And so he cast her as Rose in his famous historical drama.

Who else could have played Jack besides Leonardo DiCaprio? Matthew McConaughey auditioned for the male lead role and actually felt pretty good after the audition.
However, the role of Jack ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who then starred alongside Kate Winslet in Titanic, creating one of the most famous film couples of all time.
