In less than two weeks, Titanfall Online will enter its first beta test.
Gaming has developed differently in Asia than in the West. There, people play in “internet cafés” and haven’t focused on home consoles like we have. This means that major shooter franchises like Call of Duty, Borderlands, or Titanfall play a minor role in Asia. Only a few might play them at all. However, these franchises already have a certain name and value there.
Therefore, local studios are producing “online” versions of these games in collaboration with Asian partners, which can only be played in Asia and often have an “MMO” character, even if only in a rudimentary form. Nexon, a Korean MMO specialist, and Respawn, the creators of Titanfall, have now teamed up to bring “Titanfall Online” to South Korea. A beta test starts on December 15.
As a model for Titanfall Online, Titanfall 1 is likely the inspiration
The first part of the series likely serves as the basis for Titanfall Online. Here in the West, the second part is already running, and is currently part of the so-called “shooter crisis,” while Titanfall 2 is considered to be a significantly better game compared to the other autumn shooters that have fallen into a downward spiral.
Four Titans will be available in Titanfall Online: Atlas, Ogre, Stryder, and Destroyer. There is already some gameplay footage available.
A release for the Western market is probably not planned. There is always a faint glimmer of hope that such a spin-off becomes so successful that publishers will have no choice but to operate it worldwide. However, hope for such a miracle is rarely justified.
