The Atlas model Ion differs fundamentally from the other Titans, as most of its skills are not tied to cooldowns but to a single energy system. Its primary weapon, the Splitter Gun, has two fire modes. In the normal fire mode, you shoot a single energy projectile. When using the zoom function, your crosshair widens, allowing you to fire three energy projectiles with horizontal spread. In both modes, you have 40 shots available, but firing the alternate fire consumes energy.
Ion has the following abilities:
Laser: You fire a single, highly precise laser shot that deals high damage, especially on critical hits. Before firing, the laser can be briefly held to aim by holding the trigger. With a full energy system, you can fire two of these shots consecutively.
Vortex Shield: Ion’s shield system is linked to its energy system along with incoming damage. However, all projectiles except energy projectiles and flames can be captured and returned to the enemy, causing part of their damage.
Trip Mine: You throw three interconnected explosive mines that spread out depending on the environment in front of you. The traps can be activated by any enemy, even Grunts, and deal heavy damage.
System Ability Laser Core: Once you activate your core system, Ion’s chest laser briefly powers up. This gives you the time you need to position yourself against your target, as during the firing process you can only move limitedly. Once the laser is charged, if you can keep it on the opponent, you deal massive damage over a short period. Shields are almost immediately overloaded by the laser.
Which kits are recommended for Ion?
dh thinks: Since Ion has a very strong shield and is also fast in general movement, I only play her with Overcore. Especially when the opponent has had their Titans on the field for some time, a quickly available core system is worth its weight in gold. Like all Titans, Nuclear Ejection is also a good choice.
Ion has one of the strongest ability packages in Titanfall 2. However, without proper energy management, it is useless. To significantly boost the available energy, I always play with the Titan-bound kit Entwined Energy, through which critical hits with the Splitter Gun regenerate energy.
Also, Vortex Amplifier is a good choice, as it increases the damage of projectiles thrown back by the Vortex Shield by 35%. Energy-less trip mines, which turn this trap into a pure cooldown ability, and Heavy Cannon, which keeps your core system active longer, did not convince me. I don’t think the kit Refracting Lens is good, although the Splitter Gun then spreads fivefold in the alternative fire mode, I believe the damage potential does not compare with that of the laser.
Titanfall 2 Guide Ion: The most important thing is energy management!
Ion is a balanced Titan that possesses both a very strong shield and high damage potential, but you must manage your energy well. It needs to be played tactically; before a fight, you should always assess how many hits you can land with the laser, Ion’s primary source of damage, without losing too much energy for your Vortex Shield.
Always try to bring your opponents into positions favorable to you, especially here you can inflict damage repeatedly with the shield while posing no real danger to yourself. Use the windows of time when the enemy does not shoot to recharge energy with the Splitter Gun or deal damage with the laser. Also, use your environment wisely, deal massive damage first, and then take cover, just to place a trap and lure the enemy to you.
As Ion, always try to catch other players from the side and impose your playstyle on them according to the situation, but do not hesitate to make a tactical retreat, especially when your shield is overloaded, as Ion is easy prey.
