Northstar, with the Railgun at the edge of the action
The Stryder model Northstar stands for ranged combat, equipped with the Plasma Railgun, it holds the position of a sniper. Its primary weapon can be quickly fired “from the hip”, the optimal mode to swiftly take out enemies like pilots, but the damage against other Titans is limited. However, if you use the zoom function, the Railgun charges up to unleash its full damage potential, and you have 6 shots available in both fire modes.
Northstar has the following abilities:
Cluster Rocket: You fire a single rocket that, while lacking a tracking system, triggers several additional explosions upon impact within a short period.
Rope Trap: Instead of a shield, Northstar has a trap that can be placed on the ground. This can only be triggered by enemy Titans. If this happens, it holds the opponent for a few seconds.
VTOL Hover: Northstar rises into the air for a few seconds, just far enough to look over buildings or similar obstacles and take enemies under fire.
System Ability Flight Core: Like during the hover, Northstar rises into the air, but you do not have the Railgun; instead, you have your rocket system available. You can fire this accurately at the enemy, but keep in mind that the rockets only have weak tracking, so precision is critical, as with all abilities.
Which kits are recommended for Northstar?
dh thinks: Northstar has no shield system. If you come under fire, only your movement can save you from damage. Therefore, I always use Turbo Engine for the third dash. On tight maps where you can use buildings for cover, Nuclear Ejection is also a possible choice, especially since trapped enemies in the rope trap cannot escape the explosion in time.
For the Titan-bound kit, I use Viper Engines, which makes Northstar move significantly faster while hovering. When in the air, not only do you gain new shooting angles, but you are also vulnerable. The significant speed boost increases the chances of getting back to the ground safely or of better following enemies in the flight system.
Otherwise, I also find increased Payload useful. It extends the secondary explosions of the cluster rocket and gives them a larger radius. For pilots who have trouble locking onto targets, the ability Threat Detection is recommended. When you zoom in with the Railgun, all enemies are highlighted in red, even if they are hidden in smoke. In my opinion, the benefit of the second, additionally discarded rope trap and the penetration of Railgun shots is limited.
Titanfall 2 Guide Northstar: How to become a sniper god!
Northstar is a glass cannon, it has low armor but fast and unique movement. Your primary task is to take out enemies from a distance. Try to pressure enemy Titans from the side but never stay too long in a direct confrontation. Northstar has the potential to destroy a Titan with full armor with just a few charged shots, but the same applies to you.
As a Northstar player, you need to be tactical when calling in your Titan, if enemy Titans start firing and pursuing right after you enter, you will lose your Titan very quickly. You need to know:
Where are the enemies?
Where will they fight against my allied Titans?
How should I position myself to take advantage of these situations?
On the other hand, you need to think about how to quickly disappear from that position once you are spotted by the enemies. The flight system must be used thoughtfully. Unlike Tone, you shoot the rockets over a longer period and are also in the air: a very easy target.
Use your speed and hovering to hit the enemy from the sides constantly, and never stay too long in one spot. Strike quickly, use Northstar’s enormous damage potential, and disappear again.
