What makes New World Aeternum special?
With the new Aeternum direction of New World, the developers at Amazon Games consciously aim to distance themselves from the MMORPG label and provide more options and content, as well as a more exciting leveling or story experience for solo players.
The new solo challenges in the endgame against different bosses underline this new focus. In summary, however, New World also remains an MMORPG in the Aeternum version:
- In the game world, you encounter other characters everywhere (albeit on a smaller scale than in Throne and Liberty)
- The economy is strongly player-driven
- There are still cooperative or competitive contents like expeditions, raids, the new lawless area, outpost rush, invasions, influence towers, or siege battles
In summary, New World Aeternum is likely to be significantly more solo-friendly than Throne and Liberty.

What is the other strength of New World? In the game world Aeternum, you will find a quite unique setting with colonial and conquistador elements expanded by fantastic myths.
This foundational framework is supported by the audiovisual strengths of the game. Many regions of Aeternum look great and sound even better. Therefore, collecting resources or fighting monsters in the open world becomes even more enjoyable.
Speaking of collecting resources: Crafting plays an important and potentially motivating role in New World. Unfortunately, some gold duplicate exploits on PC servers disrupted the economy.
Whether the new console players will be able to build a community from scratch depends on whether Amazon Games will provide new servers for the Aeternum launch – in principle, PC and console players are supposed to play on the same servers.
Important: Unlike Throne and Liberty, New World uses a buy-to-play payment model, and you will need an active Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus subscription if you want to experience the MMORPG on consoles (via newworld.com).
Which MMORPG is for whom?
If you are excited about an MMORPG that feels like a real MMORPG and places a big focus on guild content and PvP, give Throne and Liberty the edge. However, thanks to the free-to-play model, all undecided players can easily try it out when the time is right.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a broad range of offerings, enjoy going solo, or occasionally like to relax while farming resources and crafting, you may have more fun with New World Aeternum.
