Darksiders 3
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Genre: Action-Adventure
I have liked the Darksiders series since the first installment, which was released in 2008 for the PS3. Since then, it has been my little “Zelda alternative” on Sony’s console, with a mature story and significantly more brutality than what you would expect from Link. After Darksiders 1 featured the rider War and Darksiders 2 focused on his brother Death, in Darksiders 3, we take on the role of their sister, Fury. Armed with a whip and elemental powers, she brings the heat to enemies from heaven and hell.
What is Darksiders 3 about? The final war between heaven, hell, and earth has broken out, but due to a misunderstanding. Humanity was not prepared and was almost completely wiped out while angels and demons continued to battle on the devastated earth. The four horsemen of the apocalypse are blamed, especially the first horseman, War. As Fury, the only female horseman, you receive a special mission to capture the seven deadly sins and possibly find out what actually started this war.
How is Darksiders 3 played? Although Fury is a powerful warrior, her health bar drops dangerously quickly to 0 if you just mash the buttons. To execute the cool whip combo attacks, you must plan and study your enemies closely before unleashing a wild fireworks display of hits in classic “hack and slash” fashion. The key aspect of the game lies in the dodging mechanic. If you dodge at the right moment, you can then counter and outsmart your opponent – which is not so easy given the enemies’ attack patterns.
What makes Darksiders 3 special? Unlike many other games, Darksiders 3 avoids a large “open world” but still creates a coherent game world that does not consist of linear levels. It is also worthwhile to revisit old areas as new sections become accessible over time, which sometimes contain upgrades for weapons.
Darksiders 3 is suitable for: All fans of action-adventures who appreciate a challenging difficulty level. If you enjoyed games like Bayonetta and prefer the difficulty level of Dark Souls, you will find the perfect blend in Darksiders 3.
Which single-player game released in 2018 did you love and play extensively? Or did you not have time for solo titles this year?
