A parenting guide has reviewed the content of a German YouTuber and Twitch streamer and finds it dangerous. This concerns a true veteran in the realm of Let’s Plays.
Who does the parenting guide warn about? The parenting guide FLIMMO regularly deals with content and assesses how suitable these contents are for children. In a contribution from December 2024, they write on their website about the YouTuber and Twitch streamer Erik “Gronkh” Range.
He is a true YouTube veteran, having uploaded his first videos in 2010 and shaping an entire generation with his Let’s Plays. He is active not only on his YouTube channel, which has over 5 million subscribers, but also on Twitch, where he has over 1.7 million followers and an average of 19,178 viewers per stream (via sullygnome).
His content revolves around gaming, but he also offers reactions to current videos in his livestreams. FLIMMO partially classifies this content as “threatening”.
We introduce you to Gronkh and his journey in our video:
“Inappropriate for children”
What does FLIMMO write? FLIMMO categorizes Gronkh and his content under the red color in their traffic light classification. This indicates that the content “can overwhelm, unsettle, or scare” and thus they label it as “inappropriate for children” (via FLIMMO).
As a positive aspect, FLIMMO considers that Gronkh introduces his hobbies and thus gives children ideas for their own leisure activities. However, there are three negative points:
- Product recommendations: Since Gronkh also advertises in his Let’s Plays or Twitch streams, FLIMMO finds this problematic. Children should not always be able to recognize that it is advertising.
- Inappropriate media content: Gronkh often plays games rated for ages 16 or 18, which are not suitable for children.
- Scary content: “Scary or threatening content is an integral part of the videos” (via FLIMMO). This can frighten children.
How does the community react? Gronkh’s community finds amusement in a Reddit post about FLIMMO’s description but has contextual words on the topic:
- Primary-Coat-4726 describes how he handles it with his children (via Reddit): “I watch Gronkh with my kids. But it’s more like storytime than Sons of the Forest. I also watch other YouTubers with them and judge for myself what fits when.”
- Sascha_Spi understands the classification (via Reddit): “Essentially, that’s true. Schedule 1, Sons of the Forest, etc. are games that shouldn’t necessarily be watched by every 10-year-old. And the humor is not really tailored to children either.”
- CromCruach1982 jokes (via Reddit): “”Scary or threatening content…” Gronkh doesn’t even have the facecam on in every video.”
Does Gronkh have such content? Since Gronkh also plays horror games and livestreams the Let’s Plays or uploads them afterward to his YouTube channel, the caution of the parenting guide is justified. When the YouTuber plays games rated 16 or 18, it is, of course, inappropriate.
Even if Gronkh often underscores horror games and similar with a humorous touch through his comments, they remain scary games that are not suitable for children. The influence of YouTuber and Twitch streamer Gronkh is enormous. So enormous that he shapes newly released games with his earlier Let’s Plays: “I had to laugh so hard” – German YouTuber Gronkh is so legendary that he shapes new games
