If you already play Call of Duty: Warzone as a free-to-play version, you can check out the multiplayer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for free this weekend. As a Warzone player, you even have some advantages.
What shooter is this? It’s about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which already boasted strong ratings shortly after release. Since the release of its BR mode Warzone, Modern Warfare has been the most popular shooter on Twitch:

When can I play Modern Warfare for free? The free weekend starts today, on April 3rd, at 7:00 PM German time and ends on Monday, April 6th, at 7:00 PM.
How can I play? In the Warzone lobby, you will find the “Stocked Up, Locked Down” 24/7 playlist over the weekend. This offers the regular multiplayer modes of Modern Warfare on two popular maps on a loop.
What do I need for this? To participate, according to Activision’s announcement, you need the free version of the Battle Royale mode Warzone. You can simply download it from your respective shop for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC via Battle.net:
- PS Store: Call of Duty: Warzone (PS4)
- MS Store: Call of Duty: Warzone (Xbox One)
- Blizzard Store: Call of Duty: Warzone (PC)
Note that you must pay 25 cents for age verification on the PS4.
Game modes and maps of Modern Warfare
Which maps can I play? The two maps in the playlist are Atlas Superstore and Shoot House. You might already know the Superstore as a Warzone player; it is set up exactly like the corresponding area in Verdansk. For multiplayer, it is a 10v10 map.
Shoot House is smaller and has been extremely popular since its release in Modern Warfare. It is a classic “3-lane map” for 6v6 players with tight rooms, corridors, and catwalks.
These game modes are available: If you have played Modern Warfare yourself or generally have not played any multiplayer shooters besides Battle Royale, you might not be familiar with the modes. Here is a brief overview of the variants that the free weekend offers:
- Team Deathmatch (“TDM”): Fight to the death, the first team to get 70 kills wins.
- Kill Confirmed: Like TDM, but you must collect dog tags from defeated enemies to score points.
- Domination: Three flags on the map that must be captured and held to score points.
- Hardpoint: There is only one point to capture that stays for 45 seconds.
- Headquarters (“HQ”): Similar to Hardpoint, but once the point is captured, your team cannot respawn. You hold the HQ until the enemies wipe you out or time runs out.

Advantages for Warzone players
If you have played Warzone before, you have a slight advantage in multiplayer over completely new players. Through Warzone, you have already leveled some weapons and unlocked attachments for gunsmith.
This allows you to create loadouts for multiplayer, similar to those for Warzone. You can find help in our guides:
- The strongest weapons of each category for multiplayer
- M4A1 – Loadouts for the strongest assault rifle
- PKM – Loadouts for the strongest LMG
- MP5 – Loadouts for the strongest submachine gun
All progress you make in multiplayer carries over to Warzone and vice versa. This way, you can level weapons for both areas ideally and later dive into multiplayer when you want to buy Modern Warfare. Since you will earn double experience points over the weekend, you will even be able to level your weapons more efficiently during this time.
If you have trouble using the AUG as the strongest weapon in Warzone, play it for a while in multiplayer. This way, you unlock the best attachments for the weapon and can use it optimally in Warzone.
