The author of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, has stated on his blog that he has been working as a consultant for a Japanese developer. There were already rumors in March that the author would be collaborating with FromSoftware, the creators of games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Who is it about? George R.R. Martin has commented on the future of the brand on his blog after the end of Game of Thrones. He also wrote about what he has been busy with instead of finishing his book series “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
According to him, he was a consultant for a video game being developed in Japan.
Now, rumors are rising again that GRRM might collaborate with FromSoftware. The Japanese studio is known for the Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
What is being rumored? In March, the first rumors surfaced that George R.R. Martin and FromSoftware are collaborating. The game is supposedly to be an open-world RPG set in a medieval world.
The Gematsu website claims to have heard alleged information about the upcoming project. According to a source familiar with the work at FromSoftware, the game is supposed to bear the initials “GR” and has reportedly been in development for three years.
The game is said to be an open-world game where players travel on horses. The title is said to be a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, with Bandai Namco as the publisher. The game is reportedly to be presented at the E3 press conference of Microsoft.
A recent post on the 4Chan website fuels the rumors even more. None of this has been confirmed so far, so the alleged information should be taken with caution:
- The next game from FromSoftware is said to be titled “Project Rune” and will be released for multiple platforms
- It is supposed to be inspired by Norse mythology and feature creatures like frost giants, draugr, and nekkens
- It could be a spiritual successor to Dark Souls, but with drastic changes
- It is described as a “dark medieval fantasy ARPG,” that is, a dark fantasy ARPG set in a medieval world
- There are supposed to be three characters that players can choose at the start of the game: a hunter with a longbow, a warrior, and a mage who casts spells from a spellbook
- There will be multiplayer. Players can invade the worlds of other players like in Dark Souls and either cooperate with them or try to kill the host.
- The story is supposed to revolve around a kingdom in a civil war. The three selectable characters serve the king. The other knights serving the kingdom disappear in search of a mysterious artifact.
- A trailer is supposed to be shown at the upcoming E3 2019
Where do the rumors come from? Besides the recently published post on 4Chan, the rumors are mainly based on a YouTube video that was already released in March. The video discusses several clues pointing to the next project from FromSoftware. The involvement of George R.R. Martin is also mentioned in the video.
In March, the colleagues from Gamestar asked Bandai Namco for a statement regarding the rumors. At that time, the publisher stated that they did not wish to comment on the rumors.
