Fallout 76 takes place after a fictional atomic war. In war, there are always losses and sad stories. A silent scene in Appalachia tells one such story, perhaps the saddest in the entire game.
Those who explore Appalachia will frequently stumble upon special images if they look closely enough. Many of them can leave a lasting impression, even if they exist “only” in a game. We have already introduced you to some particularly creepy places.
However, another place left an even deeper impression on the author of this text.
The Tragic Story of a Family
The probably saddest place in all of Fallout 76 can be found at the Kanawha lookout tower: eastern view, fairly central in the forest. The story that the images tell unfolds around and inside the lookout tower.
When you arrive at the tower, the first thing you will likely notice is a large mound of dirt piled directly beneath the tower. This takes up a good portion of the area and is hard to overlook.
On the hill, you will find a teddy bear and some wooden blocks with letters. The blocks spell out the word: “My Angel”.
Slightly beside the grave lies an overturned stroller, next to it kneels a charred corpse. Just this gives a good impression of what might have happened here. However, that’s not the whole story.
The Fate of the Mother
This place is not only about the apparent burial of a small child. The fate of the parents, or at least the mother, is also clarified. And this does not refer to the charred corpse.
If you go up the tower, you will find at the top the body of a woman, collapsed in a corner. Around the woman, wooden blocks are scattered, just like those below on the grave. Next to her is a small sleeping area where an empty baby bottle lies.
If you examine the woman more closely, you will find an improvised revolver beside her left hand. This is already the first clue as to what has happened. You will find certainty with a glance at the wall.
Right where the woman’s head rests, there is a huge bloodstain on the wall.
What do you think of this way of telling stories in the game?
Appalachia is not only a place of sorrow but also of joy. A couple recently celebrated the first wedding in Fallout 76:
