The head of Final Fantasy XIV shouted “Please step on me” to a young woman at Gamescom. Here’s what it’s about.
The game director and mastermind of Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida, was at Gamescom in Cologne and served as a judge for a cosplay competition. To the winner, he then called out, “Please step on me.”
This situation needs to be explored further. The winner was a young woman dressed as Yotsuyu, who is a villainess from the latest “Final Fantasy XIV” expansion Stormblood.
Yotsuyu is the governor of Doma, has a troubled childhood behind her, is quite a beast, smokes like a chimney, and has the lovely demeanor of a dominatrix on a really bad day.

This scene with a slight BDSM influence created a hype in the community. They then demanded “Step on me.” This became a sort of internal Final Fantasy XIV meme.
The US site Kotaku believes this is because the “head-on-foot” gesture is perceived differently in Japanese culture than in the West. In Japan, it doesn’t carry the same stigma as it does here.
When the cosplay competition took place in Germany and Yoshida crowned the winner, he praised their outfit in Japanese, which corresponded to the details of the makeup from Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood.
In the end, Yoshida added in English, “Please step on me.” The Twitch chat thoroughly enjoyed Yoshida’s statement.
The cosplayer stayed in character and relatively expressionless while being praised, although it was apparent that she was pleased. Whether she complied with Yoshida’s request is unknown.
