In November 2018, the MMORPG WildStar was closed by Carbine Studios. Since then, players have made great efforts to revive the game on private servers.
Where does the enthusiasm for WildStar come from? WildStar was a hardcore MMORPG that presented players with significant challenges in raids and dungeons. A major highlight for many players was the housing system, which ranked among the best in the genre.
In the “Goodbye, Wildstar” thread on Reddit, many players reported how well the game implemented particularly the combat system and the instances.
From their perspective, there is currently no MMORPG on the market that can build on these strengths. Therefore, they hope for future private servers.
The state of private servers
Are there already private servers? Currently, several teams of fans are working on the development of WildStar private servers. One group calls itself Nexus Forever and has already started a website, where currently no playable version can be found.
The other group, Arctium, already has “World of Warcraft” servers. They are also working on WildStar but do not have an openly accessible version on their website either.
What are the chances for private servers? The team behind Nexus Forever has published all game-related data on GitHub. The emulator is written in C# and contains the last patch of WildStar before the game was closed.
Theoretically, anyone can now run a private server with Visual Studio 2017, their own server, and the WildStar client. Many contents already function smoothly. These include, among others:
- Walking through the world
- The chat and contacts
- Skills
- Mounts
- Mail system
- And even some old addons created by players for WildStar.
On the other hand, content like housing is already available but not yet complete. Raids and many quests are still missing. Tests with private servers are already underway, but access requires contacts with the respective developers.

Too colorful, too hard, too crazy?
What caused WildStar to fail? After the closure of the MMORPG we asked you on MeinMMO what caused WildStar’s failure. Many agreed that the setting and thus the target audience were too specific.
The mix of a colorful world, too much humor and chaos, and also the high difficulty level deterred some of our readers. Not everyone found the action-based combat system optimal for an MMORPG.
Nevertheless, WildStar had a fan community, which even tried to save the MMORPG with a petition. Cortyn was also saddened by the closure.
But despite the resistance, WildStar was closed on November 28, 2018. Now it is up to the players to revive the crazy MMORPG.
