When at the E3 2019 a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 was released and Keanu Reeves came on stage at the end, the cheers were loud. After all, Reeves had just been seen in the trailer for the game, where he spoke about “burning down a city.” The actor portrays a character in Cyberpunk 2077 and some details about his role are already known, as he plays “Johnny Silverhand.”
Who is Johnny Silverhand? In Cyberpunk 2077, players encounter Johnny Silverhand during character creation. He can be chosen as a childhood hero for V (the main character). This influences the past of the main character. Silverhand was a rockerboy and thus a talented musician who rebelled against corporations and political powers with his lyrics.
Johnny Silverhand is already dead: It is also interesting that Johnny Silverhand has already died in the story of Cyberpunk 2077. A year before the events, in 2076, he has already passed away. In the Pen&Paper Cyberpunk 2020, he also died in 2024. Why V can still see him in the trailer is not entirely clear.
However, it would fit the setting well if the “rockerboy” Johnny Silverhand lives on as an AI or his consciousness continues to exist in digital form – perhaps on the chip that was seen in the trailer. This would also explain why Johnny “flickers” as V stands up – he is just a projection.
The name Silverhand, as one can easily recognize, comes from Johnny’s left arm. It was replaced by a cybernetic prosthesis.
Rockerboys fight against the corporations: Rockerboys, like Johnny Silverhand, can most easily be described as anarchists. They wage their small wars against political powers or the various corporations that have a say in the world of Cyberpunk. They often rely on music but can also engage in other artistic expressions. This was at least the case in the Pen&Paper predecessor Cyberpunk 2020.
Whether the role of Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 is identical to the role of Johnny Silverhand in the rules of Cyberpunk 2020 remains to be seen. The identical name and similar appearance at least suggest that the two roles will have many similarities.
