After the rather rocky start of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Ubisoft is reworking the game and addressing various issues one by one. In five steps, Breakpoint is set to become a better game.
How was Ghost Recon Breakpoint received? Shortly before and after release, Breakpoint had a tough time in the community and received very poor reviews. Players complained that it felt more like a loot shooter than a Ghost Recon title.
Breakpoint performed so poorly overall that, among other reasons due to the lack of revenue, the development of other games had to be postponed. Even the stock is at a low point.
How does Ubisoft plan to save the game now? However, Ubisoft hasn’t let this stop them from planning for the future of Breakpoint. The developers have reviewed the feedback and written a blog post detailing improvements.
This outlines five points that will make Breakpoint the game that players have requested.
1. Technical Improvements
What will be improved: The first step will be to free Breakpoint from bugs. Issues with bugs and stability will be addressed so players can enjoy the game without disruptive errors.
When will the improvements arrive? The first wave of improvements has already been released with title update 1.0.2 on October 15. The next wave is expected to arrive mid-November with title update 1.0.3.
2. New Content
What is coming: Another focus will be to feed Breakpoint with more content. Specifically, the first raid, Project Titan, and the Terminator Live Event are planned. Details about the content will come later.
When will the content be released? Project Titan is expected to be released in December 2019, followed shortly by the Terminator Live Event.
3. In-Game Economy
What will be improved? The third point addresses the economy in the game. Here, Ubisoft is still a bit vague about what changes will be made and how. Collectible resources will likely be the target of the change.
4. AI Companions
What is coming: As announced at E3 2019, Ghost Recon Breakpoint will get AI companions back, similar to how they were in Wildlands. They will serve as companions when players are not playing in co-op mode but still wish to approach tactics as a team.
When will the companions be released? Ubisoft has not yet provided a release timeframe. It is only said that “time is needed.” Therefore, we do not expect a release before 2020.
5. Freedom of Choice
What was the problem? Ghost Recon Breakpoint introduced several innovations that polarized the community – for instance, microtransactions that sparked an outcry.
Other elements, like the survival features or tiered better loot, have their fans who celebrate them on one side and opponents who reject them on the other.
What will now be improved: Breakpoint is set to become a “more radical and immersive” version of the current game and provide an authentic military experience. Players should be able to “tailor” their own personal experience.
However, how Ubisoft plans to achieve this has not yet been revealed. There is also no timeframe for this yet, as it is “too early” to divulge any details.
Will all this work?
How it has gone for Ubisoft so far: Ubisoft has a long history of games that, after a rough start, suddenly became successful:
- Rainbow Six: Siege did not perform well at release but is now extremely successful
- For Honor was even on the brink of a boycott; now it has thousands of players
- For The Division 2, an important content update was postponed to improve the quality of the game instead
Ubisoft traditionally sticks with service games until they achieve a status that players largely enjoy. Therefore, it is quite likely that Breakpoint will still become a success.
