The release of Diablo 2 Resurrected is imminent. The original game has actually been complete for 20 years and is only kept alive by hardcore fans. Now the community wants to know how the remaster will proceed.
When and where will Diablo 2 Resurrected be released? The release for the remaster is scheduled for September 23, 2021, at 5:00 PM German time. Diablo 2 will then be available for PC and for the first time also for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
The game will feature all the content that was available back then – including the expansion “Lord of Destruction.” The studio is trying to stick as closely to the original as possible and deliver visual improvements.

What happens after the release? One of the major features that will be added later are the so-called ladders, which you may know as “seasons” from Diablo 3. Ladders allow you to compare yourself with other players.
It is also known that the developers are considering adopting a feature from Diablo 3. Moreover, it is still uncertain whether cooperative gameplay will include crossplay, although the chances for that are rather slim.
Otherwise, Diablo 2 Resurrected will largely remain as it was before. However, the developers have revealed in several interviews that they are open to new content.
Developers are considering new runewords and items – Even Act 6?
Will there be new content? So far, no new content has been confirmed. Crossplay and personal loot are currently just ideas. In an interview with VentureBeat, Principal Designer Rob Gallerani and Lead Graphics Engineer Kevin Todisco answered some questions about the future (via VentureBeat.com). They mentioned:
“We don’t make packaged games anymore that we release and then we’re done with. [Diablo] is a living game, a live service. We will continue to have this relationship between us and the community as they start to play.”
Which contents that will be exactly, they did not want to reveal yet. Something like Act 6 is “not ruled out,” but currently not in planning. In a group interview, there was also talk of new runewords, items, and rebalancing.
Why isn’t there more information yet? The development team is currently focused on fixing all bugs and creating a foundation on which new content can potentially be built. Gallerani says: “We are focused on getting the authentic, nostalgic experience right.”
It is important that the community likes it. Only then can one think about the next steps, which is why details about upcoming content are still quite scarce.
However, the studio does not adhere entirely to authenticity. Diablo 2 will not come exactly as veterans might remember. The developers emphasized that it was important to capture the “spirit” of Diablo 2 with Resurrected, but there are still some changes:
