The currently disappointing mod system of Destiny 2 is being revamped with Forsaken. After Bungie has already revealed some information about it, there are now further details. The mods will change starting in September.

In an exclusive article from Game Informer, Bungie revealed new details about the communicated changes to the mod system ahead of the Forsaken expansion. You can expect the following from the mods starting September 4.
This is what the current mod system in Destiny 2 looks like
The only way to Max Power Level: Currently, mods can only make minor changes to weapons and armor pieces. Furthermore, legendary mods provide a small power level boost (+5), making them the only way to reach the maximum power level.
More obligation than benefit: However, many mods hardly make a difference. Most of the time, the mods in their current form feel more like a mandatory level requirement rather than a useful and notable modification of a weapon or armor.

Kinetic weapon mods only provide a +5 power level boost to the respective weapon. This doesn’t do justice to the designation of mod.
What changes with the mod system in Forsaken
Wanting instead of having to: With the release of the autumn add-on, the mods should finally become noticeably useful, so that the Guardians will want to equip the mods themselves and not just feel forced to do so.
No more power level: On one hand, the mods in Forsaken will no longer provide a power boost. Guardians should not feel compelled to equip a mod just to slightly increase their power level.
No blue mods: With the launch of Forsaken, there will only be legendary mods. The option to combine blue mods to obtain a legendary one will be removed.
Old vs New: Since the current mods will become obsolete, it is also recommended to visit the gunsmith after the launch of Forsaken. He will then exchange your old mods for components from which you can craft new mods.

No element change: As all new mods are meant to be more unique, modifications for energy and power weapons will no longer be able to change the element of the respective firearm.
The new system brings a touch more individualization
Immediately noticeable: The new mods will focus less on reducing cooldowns and much more on effects that you can feel right away.
The changes bring a touch of RPG into Destiny 2, as players will have more options to fine-tune their character to their needs.
An example mentioned is:
- Icarus Grip: improves weapon precision in the air
- Radar Tuner: reduces the time until the radar becomes visible again after using the weapon’s sight
- Targeting Adjuster: better targeting for the respective weapon
Such bonuses are meant to make the mods more meaningful. They are supposed to give the player the feeling of adding a more personal touch to an already preferred weapon, creating something truly their own. However, they will also be harder to obtain.

Special raid mods: The changes will also apply to raid weapons. These will also use this mod system, but will have access to a pool of unique raid mods.
At the launch of the Forsaken expansion, the raid mods will be specifically tailored to the new raid. However, in the future, Bungie is considering adding unique, universally applicable raid mods as well.
What do you think of these announced changes to the mod system? Can you accept them, or is there another mechanic you would have preferred to see?
