Treasures are an essential part of the Hearthstone adventures. Yet, one treasure is particularly funny and particularly chaotic.
The current solo adventure of Hearthstone has become my new obsession. After I completed the normal mode quite quickly with all classes, I am currently struggling with the heroic mode. And I noticed a treasure that will have a special place in my memories: The marvelous Wisdom Ball.
Soon, there will be 18 buffs in Hearthstone – 2 for each of the 9 classes!
Its description surprised and confused me at first, as it only says, “Passive – Occasionally gives wise advice.” This is quite confusing compared to all the other treasures which have clear effects like “Your minions cost 1 mana less” or “You can use your hero power 2x per turn, it costs 1 mana less.” Both confusing and incredibly tempting. And because I quickly fall for such temptations, I packed the Wisdom Ball right away.
I actually thought that the Wisdom Ball does exactly what the description says, namely comment on the game and occasionally say funny things. That’s exactly what the Wisdom Ball (with Khadgar’s head in it) did in World of Warcraft.
The crazy abilities of the Wisdom Ball
But in fact, the Wisdom Ball does many more things. I want to give you a few examples of what can happen and what I’ve experienced so far.
In the later fights, opponents start with more mana than you do. The ball comments, “What? Your opponent starts with more mana? Here, take some of mine!” and grants an additional mana crystal.
If you would normally die, it may happen that the Wisdom Ball intervenes and casts Ice Block. Then it comments, “I’m here. I remember when Ice Block was part of the standard format.”
If a friendly minion dies, it may comment, “Here, don’t worry… I’ll just shuffle another copy of that minion into your deck.”
If you have few cards in hand, it also likes to say, “Psst, here… just draw another card. No one will notice.” Bam, another card in hand.
Especially nasty is that the Wisdom Ball apparently has a fondness for spells. Now and then, it happens that it casts a random spell that has already been cast again. However, the player doesn’t necessarily have to be the “caster”, as I painfully learned.
The ball has simply cast the spell “The Last Seal” again for my enemy in a heated battle, causing the opponent to receive “Azari the Devourer” in hand. Ultimately, that wasn’t so bad because it left the enemy with “only” a second Azari in hand – one would have been enough to wipe me out.
Still, I just can’t resist the allure of this treasure.
Every time the “Marvelous Wisdom Ball” is offered to me, I hesitate. Most of the time, I still let myself be tempted and choose the Marvelous Wisdom Ball. I then feel like the wizard Schmendrick from “The Last Unicorn”, who is overwhelmed by the situation and quietly murmurs, “Spell, do what you want” and simply passes the responsibility to a higher power.
This is exactly how the matches feel when a merciless defeat turns into a narrow victory. Or a sure victory turns into a defeat thanks to the chatter ball because it copies my Pyroblast and hurls +10 spell damage back at me.
My most “beautiful” moment was definitely when the Wisdom Ball prevented my death with an Ice Block, only to then shoot a Fireball in my face during my own turn and kill me. Thanks, Khadgar. Just what I needed.
The Marvelous Wisdom Ball definitely has one positive effect: I no longer give up any game, no matter how hopeless it may seem.
