In Destiny 2, many players hoped for one of the coolest color combinations in the game from the seasonal shader Jacarini. But in the end, many were disappointed, as the shader quickly became a joke. But why?
Shaders spark conversation: The shader system of Destiny 2 has faced criticism on several occasions, but rarely has it been about the actual visual design of these coloring agents themselves.
This week (August 4 – 11), Tess Everis’s in-game shop is offering a new shader from the Season 11, which many Guardians initially looked forward to, but later were left disappointed or at least puzzled.
This is the shader in question: The shader is called Jacarini (in English Jacarina). According to its icon, where the 4 colors of the shader are visible, it offers a combination of various black and gray tones.
That’s why many were looking forward to the shader: The combination of black and gray, or rather white tones, is very popular in the Destiny 2 community – especially dark-colored Guardians with rich black tones are currently trending with many.
However, players often need several shaders that contain black to keep their armor completely dark. And good shaders with black are unfortunately not easy to come by. Also, gray and white tones in conjunction with black – especially if you missed Year 1 of Destiny 2 with the faction shaders from the Dead Orbits – are actually quite rare. This is because they often contain colors that ultimately make some part of the armor look mismatched.
Accordingly, many were looking forward to Jacarini and hoped for one of the coolest shaders since the faction changes. But this hope has apparently not been fulfilled for everyone.
What is the problem with this shader? After the shader became available just before the start of the Summer Event Solstice of Heroes, many experienced disappointment, astonishment, and confusion.
Because although the shader offers only black and gray tones at first glance of its icon, it apparently contains another hidden color. And that ruins the enjoyment of the shader for many players.
Even if the weapons and armor mostly look as expected from the shader, some items have certain areas colored with a bright neon blue – something no one would have remotely suspected by looking at the icon, and that spoils the overall look for some Guardians when aiming for their desired color scheme.
This reveals one of the greatest problems of the shader system: areas are not always colored according to a recognizable pattern. Also, the colors themselves often turn out to be completely different from what one would expect from the shader’s icon – regardless of whether on weapons or armor. And sometimes there are completely different colors that one would not have thought of at all. Many players have been wishing for an improvement here for quite some time.
Players are puzzled, yet the shader remains true to its name: Since then, some Guardians simply see it as a joke, with which Bungie wanted to troll the players. Others thought it might be a potential bug.
But apparently, the shader is just as it should be – including the bright blue. Some Guardians set out to find the reason for the color deviation of the “hope bearer” and even found it.
It seems that the shader simply stays true to its name. It was found that Jacarina is apparently a reference to Volatinia Jacarina – the Jacarina bird. This bird has black or dark gray plumage, which, however, occasionally shows a light bluish tint towards the edges.
