A Japanese trailer has now announced the new adaptation of a manga and anime from the 90s. MeinMMO presents the new series along with the trailer and what you can expect from it.
Which anime is it about? “Magic Knight Rayearth” is a manga and anime that tells the story of three high school girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. They are teleported to the magical world of Cephiro during a class trip, where they are supposed to be part of a legend.
The trailer for the latest adaptation shows images and scenes from the old manga and anime, giving at least a small taste of the new, modern style:
The story was first published in Japan in individual chapters in the Nakayoshi magazine by Kodansha and later released as a manga by the artist collective CLAMP, which is also responsible for titles such as “Cardcaptor Sakura”, “Chobits”, “xxxHolic”, and “Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle”.
The manga ran from 1993 to 1996 and was completed in six volumes. In Germany, it was also released in six volumes but published by Carlsen Manga. Currently, the German version is no longer available for purchase.
An anime adaptation based on the manga was produced in Japan and aired in two seasons from October 1994 to November 1995. The anime never aired in the German program, but Kazé released Rayearth here in 2003 in OV with subtitles. However, after Kazé was acquired by Crunchyroll, the anime can no longer be found on the platform.
Exact information is still missing
When does the new adaptation start? Old and curious anime fans will have to wait a little longer for more information. So far, only the announcement has been made through the trailer. We still do not know when the new anime will start, where it will be broadcast, and in what format it will be released.
What is Rayearth about? After the three schoolgirls, who did not know each other before, are drawn into the magical world, they face a difficult task. A magician named Clef urges them to prevent the downfall of Cephiro.
The princess Emeraude has been kidnapped by the priest Zagato. She is the pillar of the world and sustains it through her prayers. Without her, the world would collapse. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu receive elemental powers as “Magic Knights” and must prove themselves as a new group. They are assisted by a small creature named Mokona, which wants to help them find their so-called Machins. These are mecha-like battle robots that are supposed to help them defeat Zagato and his minions.
