What does the upgrade of the games mean? The upgrade to the PS5 version has nothing to do with backward compatibility. Instead, you receive the technically latest version of the game, which can also benefit from the PlayStation 5. It is therefore not just a simple port for the new generation.
Sony had explained that developers can decide whether their PS4 games will receive a free upgrade to PS5. Although there is no official program, it was said that they would support developers in their decision.
Where do the information come from? In a conversation with Gamespark.jp, Sony explained that it is the publisher’s decision whether the upgrade from PS4 to PS5 will be supported:
Of course, the upgrade function will be supported for the Japanese market in the same way as it was announced abroad, and it is easy for users to switch to PS5 and upgrade PS4 titles they already own (only when there is a PS5 version available).

He also added in response to the question of whether Sony would support Xbox Series X Smart Delivery: “We will flexibly support the upgrade plan (of the publisher) provided for each title.”
Is there an official upgrade program? According to Sony, there is no official program, but manufacturers should be supported in their decision.
Some developers have also already commented on whether they will support upgrading their games to PS5.

Upgrading PS4 games to PS5? These developers offer free upgrades
Some manufacturers have already commented on whether buyers can upgrade their purchased games to PS5:
- Electronic Arts announced in an article about EA nextlevel (via ea.com) that players who have purchased Madden NFL 21 and buy an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 can upgrade their game for free from the previous generation to the latest console generation. EA’s offer is valid throughout the entire Madden NFL 21 season until the release of Madden NFL 22.
- Bungie also commented on its plans for Destiny 2 until 2022: Anyone currently playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 can upgrade for free to the PS5 version. Players will still have access to all previously purchased content.
- Those who buy Marvel’s Avengers on PlayStation 4 (applies to digital and retail) will receive a free upgrade to PlayStation 5. PlayStation explained this in an official post (via blog.playstation.com). PS5 players can also play online with PS4 players. The superhero game is set to release on September 4, 2020.
- CD Project Red had once again postponed its futuristic role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077. At a press conference (via cdproject.com), the Polish developer explained that buyers can upgrade the game to the PS5 version at no additional cost.
- Electronic Arts also offers a free upgrade to the PS5 version for FIFA 21. EA calls this “Dual Entitlement” (via ea.com): Anyone who buys the game at release for PS4 or Xbox One can upgrade their game to PS5 at no additional cost.
- PolarCry 6 / FarCry 6 was leaked in the Japanese PS Store. The shop description states among other things: “Upgrade to the PlayStation®5 version: “Polar Cry 6” PlayStation®4 Digital Edition supports a free upgrade to the “Polar Cry 6″ PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.” Ubisoft has also now issued an official statement on this.
When will the PS5 be released? We now also know the price and release of the PlayStation 5. So far, more developers have followed. However, there are sure to be more developers who will comment on a possible “upgrade plan” for their games.
What games are available for PS5? Sony showed a number of games on the day of the design reveal. And thanks to several images from the official PlayStation magazine, we now know 25 games that will be released for PS5.
