Elite: Dangerous – Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC
In Elite: Dangerous, you are not given a specific game objective. Instead, you can either explore the open game world – that is, space – in single-player mode or online. In doing so, you can customize your ship to your liking with the necessary capital, explore the cosmos, or work as a trader, bounty hunter, space pirate, smuggler, or even in resource gathering.
Even though the game has no real story, there is a political conflict looming in the universe, which is said to encompass 400 billion star systems. The relationship between the three major powers, the Empire, Federation, and Alliance, is tense. Moreover, it suggests that a power struggle over succession could erupt within the Empire.
Additionally, space travelers face extraterrestrial forces: the mysterious Thargoids have appeared in the galaxy, and players still do not know what the aliens actually want.
Elite: Dangerous is for you if you are into Firefly
In the series Firefly from 2002, everything revolves around the crew of the transport spaceship Serenity. The ship’s crew tries to stay afloat with small petty crimes, but also with honest work like transporting.
Meanwhile, the team tries to avoid the Alliance – a heavily controlling government authority – as much as possible. Before the series begins, the Alliance waged a war against the fighters of the independent worlds, the Browncoats, and emerged as the victor. Nevertheless, the Alliance is not popular among all people in the solar system.
Two crew members of Serenity, Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds and his right-hand woman Zoë Washburne, fought on the side of the Browncoats in the war, rebel time and again, and often clash with the Alliance.
Unlike in Elite: Dangerous, however, the protagonists do not deal with aliens but with the dangerous Reavers. These are cannibals who mutilate themselves and commit unspeakable atrocities against their victims.
Why is Elite: Dangerous like Firefly?
The greatest similarity between Elite: Dangerous and the series Firefly lies in the freedom to do as you please in the vast universe. Just like in the series, you can earn your money honestly or operate on the fringes of the law.
Like the characters in Firefly, you are driven only by your own whims or your moral values. Want to play the pirate today or be the intergalactic taxi driver instead?
However, there is a significant difference in the setting: while Firefly is a space western, a genre mix of science fiction and western, Elite: Dangerous offers good old sci-fi fare. But what is not yet can still happen.
