In World of Warcraft many missing abilities are returning. There is something for most classes to look forward to.
Over the years, the developers of World of Warcraft have continued to refine the classes. Specializations have become increasingly important, so a Fire Mage now has completely different spells than a Frost Mage – they hardly share any abilities. This will change again with the next expansion “Shadowlands”. Alongside many shared abilities, several long-forgotten abilities are making a return!
Update: This article originally appeared in November 2019. It was updated in early March 2020.
What was said? In the future, characters will start at level 1 without a specialization. Each class will then receive a few basic abilities at the beginning, which are necessary for almost every specialization. For example, a Mage might learn Frostbolt, Fire Blast, and Arcane Explosion early on. This is intended to give players an impression of all the possibilities and create a common foundation of what exactly defines this class.
From level 10, a character will specialize and receive new abilities based on their specialization. However, “other abilities” will not disappear just because they do not belong to the specialization.
Have you seen that leveling is about to be significantly reworked?
So many class abilities are returning with Shadowlands
In addition, Blizzard has announced which iconic class abilities will be returning. These include abilities that were once in the game, were only available through talents, or were important PvP talents. All the examples mentioned below are set to return for all representatives of the respective class, making them part of the class’s “core kit” again.

Especially the announcement of “Eyes of the Beast” caused cheers among the audience at BlizzCon, as Hunters have wanted this “fluff” ability back for a long time. It has little utility in combat but was very popular among Hunters. It was always fun to explore the world through the eyes of the beast.
Please keep in mind that these abilities are just examples. There are many more abilities that will return with Shadowlands. We are sure to learn more about this in the coming months.
What do you think of this change? Do you think it’s good that many abilities are returning? Or does that just clutter your action bars too much?
