In Destiny 2, we take a closer look at the new roles in Gambit Prime. Which role should I play, what perks do the armor sets provide, and which playstyles are favored?
Gambit Prime is a new Gambit mode that was introduced with the Season 6 of Destiny 2 and can be played by all Annual Pass holders.
Here’s why you should choose a role: There are four armor sets for Gambit Prime. These activate special perks when you have enough set pieces equipped. The perks give you significant advantages in Gambit Prime, so you should collect these sets. Each set favors one of four “roles” – but which one suits you?
The Reaper and its Gambit Prime Set Perks
This is the Reaper: When you equip the Reaper armor, you glow green in Gambit Prime. The main task of the Reaper is to quickly and effectively kill PvE enemies.
The perks of the Reaper set:
- Weakens and marks high-ranking targets and Ultra enemies (the Primeval does not count), when you deal damage to them
- Multikills generate special ammo for allies
- Particles you generate stay longer. They do not disappear as quickly
- Grenades charge faster when you kill powerful enemies
This playstyle is allowed by the Reaper: As a Reaper, you fight on the front lines. You quickly slash away enemies and leave a trail of particles for Collectors to deal with. The perks are designed for you to be able to kill quickly and also make short work of tough enemies.
Bring weapons that you are comfortable with and that can kill quickly. A weapon for close range should definitely be included. Also equip a strong grenade that deals good damage – as the Reaper, you have grenades more frequently than other Guardian roles.
The Reaper suits you if you are only focused on killing things. You don’t want to deal with the other mechanics in Gambit Prime? Then the Reaper is your choice. You leave the particles for the Collectors, you only take care of the PvE enemies.
The Collector and its Gambit Prime Set Perks
This is the Collector: The Collector glows a bright white when you equip its armor set. He is responsible for collecting particles and sending blockers.
The perks of the Collector set:
- You drop particles when you die
- Particles grant an overshield when you pick them up
- You receive ammo when you deposit particles
- You can send huge 20-particle blockers
This playstyle is allowed by the Collector: As a Collector, you should always stay near Reapers to pick up their particles. However, this doesn’t mean you just follow them around bored.
Grab a weapon for close range (e.g., a shotgun) and help the Reapers generate particles. You can also run offensively through enemies to collect particles that might otherwise disappear. Because you get an overshield for collecting particles, you can last longer. Also, it’s not too tragic if you die. You drop some of the collected particles that your teammates can pick up.
The Collector suits you if you enjoyed picking up particles that others generated in regular Gambit. If you used to be the “particle thief,” your services are now recognized. You can also be particularly nasty to enemies when you send a huge 20-particle blocker. Only Collectors can do that.
The Guardian and its Gambit Prime Set Perks
This is the Guardian: The Guardian’s color is yellow. His main task is to protect the bank and the team.
The perks of the Guardian set:
- Multikills generate a damage buff against Taken
- The bank regenerates your health
- You can mark invaders for allies
- You empower allies in the Well of Light (that’s the sphere you stand in to deal damage against the Primeval)
This playstyle is allowed by the Guardian: Every team will be grateful to have a Guardian. You ensure that the bank is always clear of Taken and keep an eye on invaders, so other team members can safely carry out their tasks.
When you kill several enemies, you receive a damage buff against Taken – and also against the Primeval. With the fourth perk, you take on an important support role for your team in the Primeval fight. And since you are often near the bank, your health regenerates, making it difficult to bring you down.
For weapons, a close-range weapon is definitely suitable to quickly deal with blockers. Also, bring a long-range weapon to not only mark the invaders but also take them out.
The Guardian suits you if you enjoy taking an important support role. You might not be the big “star” who slays through enemies, dumps tons of particles into the bank, or heroically eliminates other Guardians. But you can provide the crucial advantages to secure the match win.
The Invader and its Gambit Prime Set Perks
This is the Invader: The last of the four Guardian roles shines in red. The Invader’s task is to hunt enemy Guardians in their arena and steal their particles.
The perks of the Invader set:
- You generate ammo during the invasion
- You have an improved invasion overshield
- You receive bonus damage on Guardian kills
- You can siphon particles from the enemy bank and lock the bank
This playstyle is allowed by the Invader: The Invader set helps you create more chaos as an Invader. Your playstyle should be aimed at always being ready for invasions and quickly eliminating PvP enemies. Since you can’t constantly invade the enemy arena, you should also help with collecting particles. Especially during the Primeval phase, it is your job to slow down the opposing team, defeat Guardians, and heal their Primeval.
Bring weapons that also work well in PvP. You can also equip weapons that have little ammo available, as you generate ammo during the invasion.
The Invader suits you if you are strong in PvP and enjoy annoying the opposing team. Invaders can be the heroes who destroy all enemy progress and give you a significant lead.
How to unlock Gambit Prime Set Perks
How to obtain armor sets: First, you need to collect Synths. These can be efficiently obtained by taking and completing daily bounties from the Drifter. There are Synths for each of the four roles.
If you want a Reaper armor piece, you need to activate a Reaper Synth in the synthesizer to generate a Reaper particle. You will then drop the Reaper particle into the bank that is located to your left at the beginning of each reckoning round. If you win the Reckoning match, you will receive a Gambit Prime armor piece.
How to unlock the perks: Each Gambit Prime armor piece gives you points. You can see the points total in the inventory overview:
You need 3 points, 6 points, 10 points, and 15 points to unlock the four perks on the armor sets.
You can see the perks in the character overview below the display for Mobility, Resilience, and Recovery as soon as you equip an armor piece:
The armor pieces you create at the beginning provide too few points to unlock all perks. You will need higher quality armor pieces, which will likely be unlocked with Reckoning levels 2 and 3.
You can also use Synths to increase the points for the perks for 30 minutes. This allows you to create hybrid builds that temporarily have all the armor set perks active.
