Bonus: Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
The latest installment of the popular Assassin’s Creed series lets you take on the role of Eivor, a Norseman or Norsewoman, who tries to navigate through 9th-century England under King Aelfred.
You will encounter various historical figures, such as Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan Whitecloaks, and other sons of the famous Ragnar Lodbroks. Valhalla is not on the list for two reasons: It is neither an MMO nor available on Steam.
Nevertheless, I can only recommend anyone who is into Viking settings to try the latest Assassin’s Creed at least once. Especially since it doesn’t play like an Assassin’s Creed, but more like a real Viking RPG.
Instead of being stealthy and as quiet as possible, I prefer to leap in shouting with a “Valkyrie leap” and armed with two Danish axes into my enemies. It’s an exhilarating feeling!
By the way, Ubisoft is allegedly planning to transform the whole series into a service game – perhaps Valhalla will start this and eventually make it onto the list. The beard factor here definitely corresponds to at least the thunder god Thor.
Bonus: Odin: Valhalla Rising
The MMORPG Odin also deserves a special mention – simply because of its name and the promising storyline. The new game is already extremely successful in Korea and especially impresses with its visuals.
And indeed, Odin looks quite Nordic, but the combat animations or resource gathering somehow come across as too much like a cute Asia MMO. For me, nothing that fits the rough North.
Furthermore, the game is not available on Steam, but through its own launcher as well as mobile for iOS and Android. Nice idea and certainly okay for on-the-go, but the beard factor here only rates as “3 days unshaven.”
