The famous Norsemen are a popular topic in all kinds of media, and gaming is currently experiencing a Viking hype. MeinMMO presents the 5 best multiplayer games on Steam where you can play as Vikings.
What are these games? We looked at which games are currently based on the Viking motif and are worth playing. We mainly focused on the fact that you can play these games in multiplayer mode.
All the games presented here are available for PC on Steam and are also partially available on other platforms. You will find representatives from various genres.
This is how we selected: The list is a personal selection by the author based on their experience with the games and the Viking theme. It was also important how good the ratings are and how strong the multiplayer aspect is.
For the ratings, we referred to the player reviews on Steam. The player numbers come from the analysis site steamcharts (via steamcharts.com). Additionally, the serious “beard factor” plays a big role, indicating how “bearded” the respective game is in comparison.
Outside of gaming, he is greatly interested in the culture, history, and especially the mythology of the famous Vikings. Whenever possible, he plays a Norse archetype in a game. Benedict has been a devoted Ásatrú – translated “faithful to the gods,” the belief in the old Nordic gods. He has dealt a lot and intensely with the “Aesir,” even in his studies.

What is Tribes of Midgard? In Tribes of Midgard, you play as a fallen Viking (Einherjar), who must prevent Ragnarök from occurring, the twilight of the gods. To do this, you must protect your seed of the World Tree Yggdrasil.
In a mix of survival game, action RPG, and tower defense, you gather resources to build up your village or upgrade your equipment. In saga mode, you must defeat the giant wolf Fenrir before the endless night, the Fimbulwinter, arrives. In survival mode, you play against increasingly difficult waves of attacks for as long as possible.
What makes Tribes of Midgard so good:
- 8 different classes, of which you must unlock 6
- each round is new and different, the map is randomly generated each time
- in co-op, tasks can be distributed to win in a coordinated manner
- regularly, giants attack the world – one of the biggest dangers in the game
How is the multiplayer in Tribes of Midgard? You play Tribes of Midgard in sessions and always start over. You can play either alone or with a “clan” of up to 10 players. So you can team up with up to 9 friends.
Since you start anew each time, you can easily introduce newcomers to the game. Veterans have only a few advantages at the start due to special starter equipment and more classes. There is no PvP.
Beard Factor: Gandalf the Grey. Shaggy and tall, but still somewhat unkempt and needs maintenance.
For Honor

What is For Honor? In For Honor, samurai, Vikings, knights, and the new Wu Lin battle against each other. You play as a hero of the respective faction and fight against other players or AI opponents.
In various game modes, you either play a 1v1 fight, team up with three players against another four-player team, or capture important points to achieve a point victory. Your heroes are specific classes with special areas of expertise – for the Vikings, there are:
- Raider – all-rounder with a large axe
- Warlords – heavy tanks with sword and shield
- Berserker – fast, agile fighters with 2 axes
- Valkyrie – skilled warrior women with spear and shield
- Highlander – a hybrid with a large two-handed sword
- Shaman – cunning fighters, as agile as Berserkers but focused on debuffs
- Jormungandr – destructive warriors with a heavy two-handed hammer
What makes For Honor so good:
- active combat system with detailed attacks and active defense
- quick rounds are suitable for players with little time
- varied classes each with their own movesets
- the “Revenge” system, which makes you nearly invincible for a short time
- realistic graphics and detailed executions with lots of blood
- unlockable cosmetics to personalize your heroes
- equipment system
How is the multiplayer in For Honor? For Honor is a PvP game, and the multiplayer aims for you to measure yourself against other players. Alternatively, you can play most modes with friends in co-op against AI – which can be really challenging.
