Embers Adrift
Setting: Fantasy/Middle Ages | Developer: Stormhaven Studios | Platform: PC | Release Date: 2022 | Model: Pay2Play
What kind of game is this? Embers Adrift is a sandbox MMORPG set in a medieval world. The focus is on PvE, as there will initially be no PvP.
- The game does not use classes, but allows you to choose your own weapons and abilities. However, there is a Holy Trinity+ consisting of tank, healer, damage dealer, and crowd control.
- There will not be larger quest hubs and boring farming tasks that NPCs will do by themselves. All quests in the game are supposed to tell a story and provide larger rewards at the end.
- In Embers Adrift, group play is supposed to be important. There are dungeons, raids, and group content in the open world. If you want to travel alone, you can do so, but you’ll face some challenges. A part of the story is also supposed to take place in group instances.
- As a sandbox MMORPG, crafting will also play an important role.
- There are various elements to ensure more immersion, such as the absence of a mini-map, unnecessary tooltips, and a reduced interface.
In general, Embers Adrift promotes the idea of experiencing adventures with friends that you would later tell around a campfire.
The game relies on a subscription model but completely avoids a real-money shop in return.
How has it been since the release? As expected, the release of Embers Adrift was rather quiet and without significant media attention. Since the MMORPG did not release on Steam, we cannot provide statements about player numbers.
However, the developers have already made several adjustments to the game and announced major revisions. For instance, they indicated that the mentality of players at release differs from that in the Alpha. Specifically, they are working on UI adjustments, new dungeons, adjusted sound effects, and a weather system.
Due to the initial purchase costs and the subscription model, nothing currently indicates that Embers Adrift will be shut down in the near future.
Who is it interesting for? If you are looking for action-packed combat and slick graphics, you are unlikely to find them in Embers Adrift. It is a niche game that focuses on a small but dedicated community. However, one can have a lot of fun with this community, as I’ve experienced during the beta myself. But those who prefer to play solo should steer clear of this game.
