Rank 3 – Chronicles of Spellborn
Developer: Spellborn International | Platforms: PC | Release: November 27, 2008 | Shutdown: July 2009
What was Chronicles of Spellborn? The MMORPG was actually quite a classic MMORPG with classes, quests, battles against monsters, and improving skills. However, the scenario was unique in that it was set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. The world was destroyed, and players had to survive on the remaining shards.
Interestingly, weapons and armor only had aesthetic effects on your hero. They did not contribute to its powers. These were determined solely by the skills.
How long did the MMORPG run? Chronicles of Spellborn launched on November 27, 2008. However, interest was not high from the start, which is why the servers in Europe were shut down in July 2009. In the USA, the MMORPG lasted until August 2010 due to a switch to the Free2Play model.
Why didn’t the game succeed? Player interest was rather lukewarm from the release. At that time, there were simply better MMORPGs. Among them was Warhammer Online, which can still be played today via private servers.
Chronicles of Spellborn offered too little to stand out from the powerful competition. The online game could not attract a large player base and was thus shut down quickly.
