3. The Cow Level in Diablo 2
What was this April Fools’ joke? On April 1, 1999, Blizzard released a screenshot of Diablo 2, featuring cows as enemies. At that time, the hack and slash game had not yet been released.
Since the screenshot was released on April 1, fans assumed it was an April Fools’ joke.
What eventually came of it? Upon the release of the action role-playing game Diablo 2 in June 2000, players discovered that Blizzard actually had integrated a cow level. However, it looked a bit different than in the previously released screenshot.
Instead of fighting cows in caves, players had to teleport to a special area. The cow level was very well received by Diablo fans.
