At E3, we will finally learn more about the mysterious game Marvel’s Avengers, which Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are currently working on. Now there are new hints about what we can expect.
What have previous rumors said about the game? After the announcement with a cinematic teaser in early 2017, it went quiet about the game. Square Enix basically revealed that it is a AAA title that a large team is working on. Over and over, rumors about games-as-a-service, multiplayer, and a steady stream of content have emerged.
Therefore, many assumed it would be some kind of Destiny with superheroes. So an online action game where you complete missions together with friends, search for loot, and meet and interact with other players in a hub.
Is a Destiny with superheroes coming?
What do the latest hints suggest? Now, just before E3, there is some new information about Marvel’s Avengers, which apparently is the official title of the game. An entry for the game has appeared on the E3 website. It states that it should be the ultimate gaming experience for The Avengers.
The now-deleted description stated:
“Embrace your powers and meet the developers of Crystal Dynamics and the creative team from Marvel Games as they exclusively discuss the new Marvel’s Avengers. It’s the defining Avengers gaming experience. An epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with a continuous single-player and cooperative gameplay. Hosted by Andrea Rene, you assemble teams of up to four players, master unique abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine your powers to defend a constantly expanding world facing ever-present threats.”
Does this fit with “Destiny with superheroes”? The description raises quite a few questions. Destiny and single-player don’t really go together. While you can play Destiny alone, the loot shooter is designed for multiplayer.
However, the cooperative aspect suggests that the multiplayer part plays a significant role. That, in turn, already reminds more of Destiny.
Maybe we can expect a kind of Destiny that can also be played well alone and perhaps doesn’t require a group for content, but leaves it optional whether you want to play with friends. Those who play cooperatively will have their gaming experience adjusted to a group.
What else has been said? It is said that you can assemble a team of up to four players whose abilities you must master and combine.
Furthermore, the world is supposed to continuously grow and offer you new challenges. In addition, the customization of the hero plays an important role, which sounds like cosmetic items.
So is it not an MMO?
What does this mean? According to this statement, Marvel’s Avengers will very likely be a games-as-a-service game. The constantly growing world with new threats sounds like continuous updates.
Co-op with up to four players, however, basically excludes an MMO. Whether there might be a hub where you can meet with other players is unclear. It could therefore be some kind of “MMO-Light”.
All of this sounds already like a Destiny with superheroes, where single-player fans could also have their share.
When will we learn more? Marvel’s Avengers will be presented during Square Enix’s E3 press conference on Tuesday morning, June 11, at 03:00 AM German time.
What do the players think? On Reddit, speculation about the game is already happening. There it is noted, for example, by Plebeian Games: “According to leaks, it is a Destiny-like game. Even if it has a single-player part, we will probably always be online and constantly interacting with other players.”
Whether this is really the case will be revealed on June 11. It’s exciting.
