The new “Backbone One – PlayStation Edition” controller has been introduced on the PS Blog. What features does it offer, and what is missing compared to the PS5 controllers?
This is the controller: The “Backbone One – PlayStation Edition” clearly resembles the white DualSense of the PS5 in its exterior design. But that is not surprising – after all, it is an officially licensed product.
Accordingly, the square, triangle, circle, and X buttons are designed as they are known from the DualSense. However, in the center of the controller, where the touchpad would usually be, there is essentially nothing – just space for the iPhone.
And yes, indeed, the controller is apparently only meant for iPhones. While there is an Android-compatible Backbone controller on the official site, it is not designed in the PlayStation look.
A small trailer shows what the controller is supposed to look like in use:
What is the price of the controller? On the official website (via PlayBackbone), the controller is offered for €119.99.
What features does the controller have?
On the PlayStation Blog, Backbone CEO Maneet Khaira goes into more detail about the controller. It is supposed to not only match the PlayStation 5 well thanks to its DualSense-like design but is also compatible with accessories like the Pulse 3D headset.
A key argument of the presentation is the ability to play PS5 or PS4 games via streaming with the PS Remote App on your phone. The controller is compatible with that.
However, you need a very stable internet connection for that – otherwise, there can be unpleasant stuttering on the phone, especially in online games.
Besides the PS Remote App games, the controller is also supposed to work with games from the App Store. Examples include games like Genshin Impact, Diablo Immortal, or Call of Duty: Mobile.
Moreover, other streaming services like Google Stadia or Nvidia GeForce Now should work – they are listed on the official Backbone site.
The controller is also powered by the iPhone. You do not have to charge it – you just need to pay attention to the phone’s battery. The phone connects via Lightning port.
Additionally, features such as a recording function and button for screenshots and videos, collapsible design, and a 3.5mm headphone jack are mentioned.
What features are missing?
Primarily, the lack of Android support is noticeable. As it stands, the controller is only compatible with iPhones.
Moreover, the controller differs quite a bit from the DualSense, even though the design is reminiscent of it. For instance, the familiar parallel stick position from PlayStation is not present, rather it has offset sticks – more like an Xbox controller. The D-pad is also not the same as on the DualSense and the PS Home button is missing.
Furthermore, the announcement does not mention any rumble functions or similar features. Especially due to the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, the DualSense sets itself apart from other controllers.
Can you make use of the controller? Or is this rather not for you? If so: Here you can find some great mobile games that you might want to try.
