Fans of the sci-fi classic Battlestar Galactica can breathe a sigh of relief: There is finally news about the planned series. The work on the reboot is underway and it is said to be ‘in top shape,’ as producer Sam Esmail revealed.
What kind of series is it? The project is said to be a series set in the universe of Battlestar Galactica, or rather, Kampfstern Galactica, as the original was named in Germany in the 70s. The reboot by Robert Moore aired from 2004 to 2009 and is considered one of the best sci-fi series ever.
The new series was announced in September 2019 for Peacock, an American streaming service (via Filmstarts).
Sam Esmail has been hired as a producer, known for his thriller series Mr. Robot among others. He told the Hollywood Reporter in October 2019 that he got chills at the term ‘reboot’ for the project.
After all, Ronald D. Moore had hit a home run with his reboot. Instead of a simple reboot, Esmail plans to further explore the ‘rich and interesting mythology’ of Battlestar Galactica. Since then, there has been sporadic information about the project – until now (via 3DJuegos).

What does Esmail say now? In an interview with Deadline, Sam Esmail spoke on October 25 about Rami Malek, the star of his series Mr. Robot, his upcoming film Leave The World Behind – and the planned series on Battlestar Galactica.
Apparently, the double strike of actors and writers in Hollywood, which began in May 2023, had stalled the work on the series. You can read more about the strike from our colleagues at Moviepilot.
Well, I can’t speak for the movie, but as far as the television series is concerned, we are working on it. In fact, I just read a great draft, and it is really in good shape. Now that the strike is over – at least the WGA strike is over – we are back in development.
Fans can thus breathe a sigh of relief, as the project is apparently still happening. It is unclear how it will affect the planned film, which has been in development limbo since 2010. This film is set to share a universe with the series reboot.
With Alien: Romulus, another reboot of a cult classic is currently in development. The film series also desperately needed this, as one title received such poor ratings that director James Cameron lost interest in making another Alien film.
