Amazon is currently working on an “The Lord of the Rings” MMO alongside New World and the Shooter Crucible, for which new job postings have now been published, containing some details about the game.
What kind of MMO is this? Already in July 2019, we reported on the new “The Lord of the Rings” MMO, which has been under development since 2018 by the Chinese company Leyou Technologies. Amazon decided at that time to enter the development.
The MMO is supposed to be Free2Play and be released for both PC and consoles. The story is supposed to take place before the movies and books, telling stories that lead up to these events. This means there is no conflict with the already existing MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online.
The game is at least being developed by Amazon itself in Irvine, California. The same studio is currently creating New World.
MMO will be AAA, aims to differ from other games
What new details are there? Through various job postings, a rough picture of the MMO can be formed. Many fundamentals sound interesting:
- The new MMO aims to achieve AAA quality.
- The “Core Gameplay” is supposed to be enticing even before rewards and progress come in.
- The story is to be told through in-game cinematics.
- The game is expected to visibly differ from the art-style of other “The Lord of the Rings” games and the films.
- It is supposed to have “breathtaking visuals”.
- The job posting for a Gameplay UI Engineer includes hints about integration into Amazon services, including Twitch and GameLift.
Will it even be an MMORPG? So far, the new game from Amazon and the Chinese company Leyou Technologies, which holds large stakes in the developer of Warframe, has only been referred to as an MMO.
However, it was stated in an earlier job posting for the UX Designer that the new game should have a large number of interconnected features, as is common in other MMORPGs.
This at least gives hope that it might include more role-playing elements and could even become a full MMORPG.
When will the new “The Lord of the Rings” MMO be released? So far, Leyou Technologies and Amazon are keeping very quiet about information regarding their MMO. However, the job postings suggest that the game is still early in development. A release is not yet in sight.
