While many users speculate about the price of the Xbox Series X and PS5, Xbox head Phil Spencer explained that they are not concerned about sales figures. That would be the wrong strategy. Rather, they want to connect all players in one ecosystem.
What is it about? Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke on Gary Whitta’s Animal Talking Podcast with other participants about the Xbox Series X and the delay of Halo Infinite. During this, he also talked about the sales of Xbox.
This is what he says: In the discussion, he explained that the goal is not to sell the most consoles. Because that is not Microsoft’s intention:
“If that [selling more consoles than Sony and Nintendo] were our approach, we wouldn’t develop our games for PC. We wouldn’t develop our games for the Xbox One; we wouldn’t do xCloud and allow people to play games on their phones.”

He reaffirms his statement again: “How many consoles I sell versus how many consoles another company sells, Sony or Nintendo or other companies as in earlier times, that’s not our approach.”

PS5 vs Xbox: Sony and Microsoft have different strategies
This is how Sony proceeds: Sony recently explained why you can only play certain games exclusively on the PS5: Certain games and features require new hardware and more power, which is simply not possible on the old console generation. Developers also have entirely new opportunities this way.
This is what Microsoft does differently: In an interview with Webedia, Xbox head Spencer explained that they have a special vision with the release of the Xbox Series X. The goal is to create a complete ecosystem, and that succeeds…
- by having the games released for both Xbox Series X and Xbox One
- and because with xCloud all players can play everywhere
- and PC players are not excluded either.
This way, all players are integrated without excluding anyone. That’s why it’s also not a problem if you don’t buy the Xbox Series X right at launch in 2020.
This is why Spencer is bothered by Sony’s strategy: Because if players now have to be forced to buy certain hardware to participate, it misses the point of gaming. After all, the high performance of the Xbox Series X should not keep players from playing. That’s why Spencer is also not a fan of exclusives, as they will exist on the PS5.
