Thanks to Pokémon GO , it’s no longer news to hunt and catch small monsters in the real world. Now, however, the next franchise is attempting an AR game, The Witcher: Monster Slayer (iOS/Android).
This has been announced: Developer CD Projekt Red announces The Witcher: Monster Slayer. The game is a mobile spin-off of the popular The Witcher series and can be played in the real world.
It relies on similar elements as Pokémon GO. So you need to explore the real world to find the monsters. Here, however, you don’t catch the creatures, but fight them.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer – Could this be something?
These elements the game has: There are some completely new components for Witcher fans; other things you may already know from the games on console or PC:
- Time of day and real weather should play a role
- You can use potions, oils, and bombs against the monsters that you crafted beforehand
- You level up your character through battles and a story-based quest series
- The game takes place at a time when witchers are still relatively new to the continent
- You fight against monsters that are partly familiar and partly entirely new

Could this concept work? The success of Pokémon GO shows that such an AR game can indeed work.
However, there are also examples that did not have as much success. With Wizards Unite, also by Pokémon GO developer Niantic, huge success did not materialize. It had a major franchise behind it with Harry Potter, but now the game has only a fairly small community.
The big difference with Wizards Unite is that The Witcher is already an established game – there were only a few games for Harry Potter, and success came primarily through books and movies.
The Witcher is also a huge franchise, but until now, the game was only known on console and PC. It remains to be seen whether fans will embrace the mobile concept.
When is The Witcher: Monster Slayer supposed to be released? There is still no exact release date. However, it is expected to be announced sometime in 2020.
