After more than 4 years, Witcher 3 has reached a new record and has more players than ever before. The new series probably has a lot to do with that.
The Witcher series on Netflix was definitely the biggest Christmas surprise for many fans of the franchise. While the series is heavily criticized by critics, the “normal” viewers seem to love it. This has also had a significant impact on the game series “The Witcher” and especially “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” – the game is more popular than ever.
What happened? Just before Christmas, the series “The Witcher” premiered on Netflix, which is based on the associated books and also the video game series. Watching the series and all the hype surrounding it has also given the games a good “boost.” During the Christmas holidays, the player numbers for all 3 “The Witcher” titles increased significantly, until finally a little miracle happened:
Witcher 3 reached a new peak of concurrent players. With 93,835 players simultaneously on Steam, a new record was set. Witcher 3 – Wild Hunt had not even had that many players shortly after its release. And this does not even account for players who do not play via Steam.
Why is this so special? The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now over 4 years old and is a pure single-player game – there are no multiplayer modes or new expansions that could still captivate players after years.
That a single-player title sets a new player record after almost half a decade is extremely unusual, especially given the already high numbers that Witcher 3 had in the past.
In any case, the Witcher series must have given the game series a significant boost. How good that the games are also on sale during the holidays on almost all platforms.
Did you check out the adventures of Geralt on PC or console again in the last few days? Or did the Witcher series have no impact on your gaming behavior?
