With Battle for Azeroth, more significant changes to PvP are once again being made in World of Warcraft. PvP servers are being abolished, instead there will only be “normal” and RP servers. However, no one has to forgo PvP in the open world because Blizzard is introducing the War Mode for that.
What is the War Mode? In the respective capital of their faction (Stormwind or Orgrimmar), players can willingly sign up for the War Mode. Their PvP will then be activated, and they will be placed in a “phase” of Azeroth where they can only encounter other players who have also activated PvP. This ensures that the game world always represents a threat.

Why was the old system stupid?
The decision to join a PvP server has long-term consequences. Those who simply had “had enough” of PvP couldn’t just walk away but had to endure gankers or avoid the game altogether. There was never a peace phase if you just wanted to quest comfortably and play a little more relaxed without the constant fear of a PvP attack.
There were also some problems on PvE servers. Because here, activating PvP was usually not a choice but was forced by quests. Those who were still “brave” and walked around with activated PvP usually fell into a trap. Players from the opposing faction waited until their health points were low and only activated their PvP at the last moment. This allowed them to deliver a quick death blow without ever putting themselves in great danger.
Or PvP quests became a friendly collaboration where players killed mobs together without attacking the other faction. While this is certainly a very social approach, it is not in the spirit of PvP.
What is better with the War Mode in WoW’s PvP?
Regardless of the server selection, players can also register for a PvP experience at short notice, thereby experiencing World of Warcraft much more intensely. Anyone participating in PvP now wants to participate.
At the same time, there is the option to consciously opt-out of PvP. Those who once thought on PvP servers: “Now just level a bit comfortably and watch some YouTube on the side” can live that dream.
In any case, signing up for PvP is now a conscious decision where players know exactly what they are getting into without being permanently bound to it.
Nevertheless, there are some concerns. The additional incentives in War Mode, such as more experience points (15%), gold, or Azerite (10%) are “too good” to ignore. This likely leads many players to sign up for the War Mode without actually being interested in PvP. And that, in turn, leads to complaints about why someone wanted to “kill someone who just wanted to benefit from the XP bonus” – discussions that every PvP player probably knows already.
In summary, the War Mode promises a better experience for PvP fans and those who want to face a “serious” PvP threat but have so far been hesitant to join a pure PvP server. If the frustration becomes too great, a trip to the capital is sufficient to reverse the decision. A rather annoying step, but enough of a hassle for players to consider how they want to spend their evening beforehand.
