With New Horizon, Outriders has brought fresh content into the game for the first time since its release. Additionally, there have been some changes to the endgame. MeinMMO summarizes how the update is received by the players.
What is New Horizon? This is the first major content update for Outriders. The loot shooter had a rocky start in April 2021, facing numerous issues and losing a significant number of players.
For most of the year, the developers struggled with bug fixes and other difficulties.
Now, a large part of these issues has been addressed, and with New Horizon, they want to enter the next phase. For this, the update has brought some changes that have long been requested by the community.
- The endgame and its expeditions have been completely revamped. It is called Endgame 2.0.
- Tiago, the “Xur of Outriders,” has finally been improved and is now useful.
- There is now a completely free and easy-to-use transmog system.
- Some balance changes have been added to strengthen players for the toughest missions.
- On top of that, there are four brand new expeditions.
The full patch notes can be found on the Outriders subreddit. (via reddit)
But how is the update received by the players? There are now some initial voices, and they sound quite positive. We summarize the reactions to the update for you.

Expeditions are finally enjoyable
This is how players react to the expeditions: This is probably the biggest innovation of the update and at the same time the most popular.
- The removal of the timer has been received particularly positively. Previously in expeditions, the quality of the reward depended on how quickly one could complete such a mission.
- This led to frustration and a one-sided build diversity. Since fast times had to be achieved, one had no choice but to build DPS builds to deal as much damage as possible.
- Without the timer, these missions change significantly, even though the basic content remains unchanged.
For example, user ErikSievert writes: “I never would have thought that I could finish a CT15 all by myself. Now I can. Finally, I’m no longer tied to the level of my equipment. I can finally enjoy the endgame, and it will bring me many hours of fun in the coming days.” (via reddit)
Without the timer, it is now possible to approach strategically and try out different approaches.
The new expeditions are also well received. Rock_For_Life says: “I’ve only played two, but they are great. Although they use enemies that have existed in the game before, they were not in the [old] expeditions. Fighting a shaman again was fun, but I love the return of the spider boss. I can’t wait to see what the other two have in store for me. Overall good job.” (via reddit)
However, DPS builds still have the advantage and are much more enjoyable to play. Overall, many returnees are convinced by the changes to the expeditions.
But there is another part of the update that many are positively noticing: transmog.
“This is how transmog should be integrated into all games”
What is this anyway? With a transmog system, you can customize the appearance of your armor and weapons regardless of their stats. This allows you to decide how your character should look without having to alter your build.
- The new system allows you in Outriders to unlock every piece in a transmog library. You only need to have it in your inventory.
- Once you have unlocked a variant, you can use the appearance for another piece at any time.
- This also applies cross-class, so you can, for example, run around with a legendary Pyromancer armor even if you’re playing as an Assassin, and so on.
There are no additional costs or required resources; you simply need to have found a variant once. Unfortunately, this does not apply retroactively, so you will have to find everything you previously dismantled or sold again.
This is how the system is received: Players who have been able to test the system are enthusiastic.

Rock_For_Life writes: “Simple, quick, and free. Unlimited times. Every design is instantly shared across all our characters. This is how it should be done.”
Overall, the update is viewed positively by the players, but there are also some limitations.
Who should check out the update?
This is what a player thinks: User Godified already has a clear opinion on this. He can only recommend the update to players who have not achieved everything before:
If you are a new or returning player who has been a casual or slower grinder who has not had all the legendary items, nor wanted to achieve accolades, and still has something to do? Great content! […] If you are an endgame player who has everything, has farmed every item, and achieved all accolades? The update provides us no incentive to return for a long time.

Once you’ve played the new content, there won’t be much left to discover. Here, the player refers to the upcoming add-on announced for 2022.
But for players to stick around until then, Godified sees no other way than to deliver new content monthly. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.
After all, Outriders does not define itself as a live-service game like The Division, Destiny 2, or other online games.
The new update at least brings a positive vibe back to the community that hasn’t been there since launch.
What do you think of the update? Have you been able to test it yet? Or is that not enough for you to play Outriders for the first time or again?
