The Free2Play MMORPG Lost Ark has reached 505,675 concurrent players on Steam. The special thing: The game is not even free yet. Nevertheless, the MMORPG from South Korea has been a complete success on Steam. The top seller on Steam is precisely the €100 package.
This is the situation:
- The MMORPG Lost Ark was released in 2018 in South Korea, and since then it has also come to other countries in Asia and to Russia. In Europe and North America, however, players had to wait until February 2022 to finally dive into the MMORPG that has made a good name for itself in Asia.
- The Free2Play MMORPG started on February 8 with a “Headstart” for pre-orderers. Steam users had to pay at least €15 and get a “Lost Ark Bronze Founder’s Pack” to participate in the headstart. The game officially begins on February 11 – then everyone can join for free.
- But apparently, the €15 only deterred a few. On the first day, the MMORPG had 505,000 concurrent players on Steam.
The 4 top sellers on Steam are all Lost Ark
The special thing is: When you look at the top seller list on Steam, you notice that not the “cheap alternative” among the founder packs is at the top, but actually the most expensive alternative was purchased the most:
- In 1st place among the top sellers on Steam on 09.02.2022 is the “Lost Ark Platinum Founder’s Pack” for €100
- In 2nd place is the Bronze Pack for €15
- In 3rd place among the top sellers is the Silver Bundle for €25
- In 4th place comes the Gold Package for €50
- Only in 5th, 6th, and 7th place are current or future releases of games with Dying Light 2, the DLC Crusader Kings III Royal Court, and Total War: Warhammer III
What’s in the luxury package? The Platinum Founder Pack includes the 3-day early-access process, like all other packages. But in addition, there are many cosmetics and knick-knacks such as 7,000 royal crystals, exclusive pets and mounts, plus hero upgrade chests up to level 50, 50,000 silver, and much more.
Apparently, MMORPG fans are willing to spend money
What’s behind it: It’s an interesting phenomenon. Apparently, MMORPG players act on the principle: “If I already buy a Free2Play MMORPG, I might as well get the most expensive version – otherwise, I might miss out on something in the end.”
This shows that many players already feel a “strong attachment” to Lost Ark and are willing to invest a lot of money before the release.
In the €100 version, the Free2Play MMORPG is at least more than twice as expensive as New World, the last Steam hit that proved that MMORPGs can still reach a lot of players:
