Cruel narrator would have been “too exhausting” for players in the long run
In a recent interview with TheGamer , Amelia Tyler, the voice behind the narrator and game master of Baldur’s Gate 3, revealed that her original interpretation of the narrator was much meaner.
Originally, she accompanied players on their journey and commented on their actions with a certain degree of malice, similar to Scar from “The Lion King”. She was meant to watch players fail and take delight in it.
Tyler explained to TheGamer:
The version in Early Access was more like an outside Dungeon Master. The direction I received was: “Think of Scar from The Lion King” – I enjoy watching you fail. That will be great.

Why was it changed? However, this vengeful approach was discarded in the Early Access of the game and replaced with a gentler narrator. This narrator and game master felt less like a separate entity challenging players, but more like an inner voice in their heads.
Amelia Tyler emphasized:
[…] I am in their heads all their lives, and I know how they think, and I fully agree with every decision they make. […] Unless they roll a 1, then I am merciless.[…].

The decision to soften the narrator’s cruelty allowed players to make their own choices without constant judgment. Amelia Tyler explained that she wanted the narrator to feel like an inner voice in the players’ heads. Accepting their decisions until a critical failure occurs.
Tyler explained that the decision for the change also stemmed from the fact that the cruel version would have been “too exhausting” for players over a long gaming session and would have diminished the fun.
Although the original cruel version of the narrator did not make it into the game, players still have the opportunity to hear Tyler’s outtakes from the recording session on her TikTok channel. The outtakes offer a humorous glimpse behind the scenes.
